The United States Department of Defense has put forth a great deal of effort to improve the quality of data and efficiency in the logistics process. All physical military property is required to be marked with a series of UID registry bar code markings. These serve to identify a particular item and transmit its important information regarding storage, transportation, and maintenance. If for any reason, a contractor or third party is hired under contract by the Department of Defense, it is obligatory for all items that are involved with the contractor to be entered into the UID registry as well. This creates not only a system of accounting and tracking for interior items, it provides the same support to any externally, but still important, objects and items.
