Ev Charging: Ac Charging Vs Dc Charging
The world is changing very fast. With every development taking place in the modern world, the initiatives to save the environment have also been increasing. One such development is the introduction of electric vehicles also known as EVs. Electric vehicles means automobiles which depend on batteries to run. These automobiles do not utilize fossil fuel for their operation and totally depend on electricity which is nature friendly.
We can all agree that the future of EV is inevitable. But one thing to keep in mind is that the battery of these automobiles drains after covering a specified distance and it needs to be recharged every time it runs out of charge. If someone’s planning to buy an electric vehicle, they should prioritize one thing i.e. the charging speed of the battery. The speed with which your battery will charge in your EV will be very crucial for you as you will have to plan out your daily routine according to that.
History of EV Charging
Earlier the batteries were not rechargeable batteries and when the EVs battery used to get discharged, they were disposed of and replaced with new batteries. ...
... With the invention of rechargeable batteries, instead of replacing the dead batteries, they were recharged again.
With time, charging stations, also known as a charge points or electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE), were introduced. These could be explained as a place or a piece of equipment that supplies electrical power through the plugins to a battery-enabled electric vehicle.
How is it Charged??
Electric charging stations supply only AC current. And the batteries on electric vehicles require DC current to charge. Therefore, all electric vehicles have a converter or rectifier onboard. These converters convert the AC power received from the charging points and convert them into DC power. There are basically three types of charging speeds available to charge an EV. They are named Level 1, Level 2 and Level3. Level3 charging is also known as DC fast charging (DCFC).
AC charging VS DC Charging
AC Charging - These are the easiest style of charging speeds. All Level1 and Level2 charging speeds come under AC charging. They are mostly installed in homes, offices, parks, shopping plazas, etc.
-Level1 charging will require a 120V outlet to charge and can be connected in the homes directly. It will take around 8-12 hours of continuous charging to fully charge an EV fitted for around 250 km.
-Level 2 charging requires 208V – 240V output which requires a wall box EV charger connected at homes, offices, etc. They need comparatively less time around 3-8 hours to fully charge an average EV.
DC Charging or Level3 Charging - The Level3 or DC fast charging is among the latest technology-integrated fast charging options available to charge an EV vehicle. DC charging has eliminated the use of a converter required to convert the AC power to DC power in the vehicle as it directly supplies DC power to the batteries of an electric vehicle. They don't have any limitation on the minimum requirement of power output and can charge from 50 kW to 350 kW significantly reducing the charging time of the battery to under an hour depending on the vehicle.
The use of DCFC chargers is increasing as time progresses. It is only going to increase rapidly in the upcoming future of automobiles. Many car brands have started making electric vehicles keeping this in mind which is only going to increase the need for charging stations established at different reachable locations.
