What Is Ib Diploma Programme? What Are Ib Diploma Requirements?
The IB Diploma Programme (IBDP) is an internationally recognized educational curriculum offered to students aged 16 to 19. It is designed to provide a comprehensive and rigorous education that prepares students for success in higher education and beyond. The IBDP aims to develop students who are knowledgeable, compassionate, and globally-minded, fostering critical thinking, research skills, and a strong sense of intercultural understanding.
Here are the general requirements for obtaining an IB Diploma:
Six Subject Groups: Students must study a broad range of subjects from six different groups:
a. Language and Literature (e.g., English, Spanish, French)
b. Language Acquisition (e.g., a second language)
c. Individuals and Societies (e.g., History, Economics, Psychology)
d. Sciences (e.g., Biology, Chemistry, Physics)
e. Mathematics (e.g., Mathematics, Mathematical Studies)
f. The Arts or Electives (e.g., Visual Arts, Music, Computer Science)
Three Higher Level (HL) and Three Standard Level (SL) Subjects: Out of the six subjects, ...
... students choose three for in-depth study at a higher level (240 teaching hours) and three for standard level study (150 teaching hours). HL subjects generally require more extensive coursework and assessments.
Theory of Knowledge (TOK): This interdisciplinary course explores the nature of knowledge, encouraging students to reflect critically on the different ways of knowing and the areas of knowledge. Students are assessed through oral presentations and a written essay.
Extended Essay (EE): Students undertake independent research on a topic of their choice, producing a 4,000-word essay. This process develops research and writing skills while exploring a subject in depth.
Creativity, Activity, and Service (CAS): CAS aims to foster students' personal and interpersonal development through participation in creative activities, physical activities, and community service. Students are required to undertake a range of activities in each of these areas.
Assessment: Students are assessed through a combination of internal and external assessments, including examinations, coursework, oral presentations, and practical assessments. The final grades are awarded on a scale of 1 to 7 for each subject, with additional points available for TOK and EE. To receive the IB Diploma, a minimum of 24 points is required, with certain conditions regarding subject grades and overall performance.
It's important to note that specific requirements and subjects offered may vary slightly between different IBDP schools. Therefore, it is advisable to consult the official IB documentation or reach out to specific schools for detailed information on their particular requirements.
