If hygiene is neglected, gingivitis can develop and progress to periodontitis. This is the destruction of gums and bone by the body trying to attack the plaque and tartar. Periodontal disease (gum disease) is more common than you might think. Because it is not usually detected until it has reached advanced stages, many people may have this disease without even knowing it. It is estimated that more than half of adults over the age of 30 have the disease in some form.

Periodontal disease is serious. It is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. New research is exploring possible links between gum disease and diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and other serious ailments. The good news is that gum disease is preventable and treatable. If caught early, it can be reversed. Regular dental checkups are critical to the prevention and detection of periodontal disease. Bacteria emerge from the plaque and tartar that build on our teeth. If plaque and tartar are not regularly removed, the bacteria increases, and so does the risk of gum disease.

Recession or exposure to root surfaces can occur for many reasons and causes unsightly ...
... irregularities in your smile and painful tooth sensitivity. Nanton Dental Care assesses your gum health, determines the source of your recession, and comes up with the best treatment options. The Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique is often an excellent minimally invasive option with great results.

CHAO PINHOLE® SURGICAL TECHNIQUE

What is gum recession? Gum recession refers to the loss of gum tissue along the gumline. Gum recession can occur due to periodontal disease (gingivitis, periodontitis, advanced periodontitis), the natural aging process, or abrasive habits when brushing the teeth.

Why should gum recession be taken seriously? When gum recession occurs, the tooth’s root structure becomes exposed, which means that tooth decay and other problems can affect the teeth along the gumline and beneath it. Since healthy gums are essential for a healthy mouth, treating gum recession is important for lasting dental wellness.

What is the Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique (PST)? The Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique is a minimally invasive option for treating gum recession. Unlike traditional grafting techniques, PST is incision and suture free. All of the tools and techniques used to perform the Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique were created by Dr. John Chao, who trained our Dr. Amanda.

How does the Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique (PST) differ from traditional gum grafting? Traditional gum recession treatments involve using a donor tissue or soft tissue grafts to rebuild the gumline. This soft tissue would be sutured in place, and as the gum tissue healed, it joined with existing gum tissue. While this traditional grafting treatment is effective, comparable results with better patient experience can be achieved through the Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique.

How is Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique (PST) performed? During the Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique, a needle is used to make a small hole in the patient’s existing gum tissue. Special instruments are used to loosen the gum tissue through this pinhole gently. These tools help expand and slide the gumline to cover the exposed root structure. No grafts, sutures, or incisions are needed with the Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique. It simply involves the adjustment of the existing tissue.

What are the benefits of the Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique (PST)? There are many benefits of the Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique, including:

• Less discomfort for the patient after treatment
• Faster recovery for the patient than traditional grafting
• No need for uncomfortable sutures
• No need for scalpels or invasive surgical tools
• No need to take donor tissue from the patient’s palate
• Excellent, natural-looking, long-lasting results
