History Of Pga Golf

The Professional Golfers' Association of America was founded in 1916 in New York City. It was organized on the heels of a luncheon hosted a month earlier by the wealthy department store owner Rodman Wanamaker. The luncheon was held at the Wykagyl Country Club in New Rochelle and he had several of the leading golf professionals of the day in attendance. They prepared the agenda for the formal organization of the PGA in New York City a month later.
Tournament players left the PGA of America in 1968 to form their own organization, the Association of Professional Golfers (APG). The APG was short-lived, however, with the players abolishing it not even a year later to operate as the PGA Tournament Players Division. The name would officially change to the PGA Tour in 1975.
The PGA Tour is an organization that operates the main professional golf tournaments in the United States. The PGA Tour is not to be confused with the PGA of America, with the latter being primarily an association of club professionals.
Today, the PGA Tour operates three tours: PGA Tour (top tour), Champions Tour (for golfers age 50 ...
... and over), and Nationwide Tour (a developmental tour).
Most tournaments operated by the PGA Tour are contested in the United States. There are a few exceptions, however. Canada, Mexico, and Puerto Rico host one event from the top tour each year. The Dominican Republic and the United Kingdom regularly host tournaments for the Champions Tour. The Nationwide Tour is the most widespread in terms of tournament locations, with tournaments hosted in Canada, Mexico, Panama, Australia, and New Zealand.
The PGA Tour is set up in a way that it rewards consistent performance. Players on the Nationwide Tour are undoubtedly trying to move up to the PGA Tour, and a player who finishes in the top 25 in money-earnings at the end of a year gets to play on the following year's PGA Tour. Additionally, golfers who win three or more events in a calendar year get PGA Tour privileges for the remainder of the year plus the following full season.
Each fall, the PGA Tour conducts an annual Qualifying Tournament. It is a six-round tournament and the top 25 finishers receive privileges to play in the following year's PGA Tour. Remaining finishers in the top 75 get to play on the Nationwide Tour.
Golfers already on the PGA Tour also need to stay on top of their game to stay on the top tour. At the end of each year, the top 125 money-winners on the PGA Tour receive a tour card for the following season, which gives them exemption from qualifying for most of the next year's tournaments.
There is also a PGA European Tour, which is separate from both the PGA Tour and the PGA of America. The organization runs a tour with most events taking place in Europe but with events throughout the world outside of North America. The PGA European Tour is considered second only to the PGA Tour in worldwide prestige.
Although many PGA Tour golfers play in the four major golf tournaments, none of them are ran by the Tour. The PGA Championship and Senior PGA Championship are both run by the PGA of America, not the PGA Tour.
The PGA Tour is responsible for organizing the remaining 43 (as of 2009) week-to-week events. These tournaments include the Players Championship, FedEx Cup, and the Presidents Cup.
