Reed Makes Decision Apparent
There was a very notable announcement at the end of the Baltimore Ravens season last year following a loss to the Colts, which did not receive much attention. If you remember correctly, Ed Reed stated that he was 50-50 in deciding rather he was going to come back to the game, or actually retire from the NFL. Perhaps we did not take it for much more than what it was worth because we thought there was no way that Reed, at the apex of his game, as the top safety in all of the NFL, would actually be retiring. Evidently, however, Reed was closer than we all thought to retirement, due to injuries that he sustained on his hip that required surgery over the off-season.
Well, we apparently have our answer, as Reed not only committed to being back with Baltimore for next season, but he also went on the record saying that he was hoping to talk to the team about a new contract. Reed has three years remaining on a deal that was originally a 6 year contract extension, that keeps him under wraps until 2013. Reed asking for a new deal, must be a tell-tale sign that his hip is healing better than ever.
He is hopeful to return for ...
... the Ravens season opener as they face off against the New York Jets to kick off the 2010 campaign. Reed, however, stated that he was at about 35 percent right now, and acknowledged that there is a very real possibility that he will miss a portion of the upcoming season. Ravens fans, and fellow players, will not mind at all, as the team is a potential Super Bowl contender, and the return of Reed only strengthens their chances.
Reed has always been a ball-hawk, known for game changing interceptions, as well as administering the big hits at the biggest of times. He has 46 career interceptions, taking 11 of those back the other way for six points. Reed is a once in a lifetime talent, and it is good to see that injuries are not going to cut his Hall Of Fame career any shorter than he would have liked it to be. Now Reed can recover, perhaps get a new deal with Baltimore, and walk away on his own terms. I only wish that it could have been that way for some of the other NFL greats.
