What Are The Steps Involved In Laying A Resin Driveway In The Uk?
Resin driveways are becoming the real deal now as it concerns outdoor decoration and flooring solutions. They are desired for several reasons including its surface smoothness, crack resistance, durability, anti-slip property, low maintenance requirement, visual appeal, and permeability, among other features.
However, to enjoy all these, the driveway has to be laid correctly. Failure to lay your resin drive accurately will mean that it will not last and you will not enjoy your driveway. You will also incur more costs in maintenance and repairs. Therefore, take note of the following steps and ensure you lay your resin drive correctly. On the other hand, you can entrust the installation of your driveway into the hands of professionals. That way you can be sure of getting a quality installation.
The steps involved in laying a resin driveway are;
Ground preparation: Ground preparation is very important to a lasting resin driveway. If you fail to prepare the ground properly, your driveway will have issues soon. Preparing the ground includes removing soil, vegetation or other impurities that may interfere ...
... in the installation. Ensure that the ground is compacted and leveled. If there are undulations in the ground, issues such as cracks, swelling, or caving in may appear in time.
Prime the surface: Applying a primer to the surface is the next step and a key action to be taken after preparing the ground. Adding a primer helps the resin to bond properly to the surface and ensures that moisture doesn’t enter the resin.
Before priming the surface, ensure that it is dry and doesn’t contain any impurities. Then prime the surface using a roller to spread it evenly. The primer must be allowed to be completely dry before laying the subbase.
Lay The Subbase: Laying a resin driveway has to be done in layers. The first layer to be laid is the sub base. The thickness of your subbase determines how much load your driveway can bear. The sub base has to be laid properly so that the driveway does not sink in after a period of usage.
We recommend a thick layer of MOT Type 1 at 50mm thick. Thereafter, a 20mm layer of sand is applied to it. Before the resin is applied, ensure that the sand is thoroughly compacted.
Lay the Resin: Once the sand is applied and compacted, the next step is to lay the resin.
There are two types of resin driveways and the method of laying the resin in both driveway types is different.
To lay a resin-bonded driveway: lay a layer of resin (ideally 4mm thick), then scatter the desired aggregate stones on the resin. This creates a textured surface. The setup is allowed to dry.
To lay a resin-bound driveway: first, mix the resin slowly for about 20 seconds. Pour the aggregate stones into a forced action mixer and then add the already mixed resin. Slowly add your sand or crushed glass. Ensure that mixing time is the same for all batches and clean the mixer after each batch. Ensuring a uniform time for mixing ensures color uniformity. Mixing time should not be more than 4 minutes.
Take the mixture of resin and aggregate stones to the driveway area and pour accordingly. Use a trowel to smoothen the surface.
Apply A Sealant: Add a sealant to the just-installed driveway to prevent dirt build up on the surface. Sealants provide a protective barrier for the driveway. Ensure you meet a licensed installation company to tell you the suitable sealant for your driveway. The sealant should be added via a single layer, either using a sprayer or a roller.
After the application of the sealant, allow the surface to cure for a minimum of 8 hours or ideally, 24 hours before usage.
