What is Lean Duplex Stainless Steel?
Lean Duplex Stainless Steel is an austenitic variant with corrosion resistance, high strength, and excellent formability, making it a suitable alternative to standard austenitic grades for various applications.

Properties are achieved via the microstructure of a ferritic-austenitic alloy. Such alloys feature approximately 50% ferrite and 50% austenite phases for optimal corrosion and mechanical strength properties.

These alloys are highly resistant to stress corrosion cracking, making them suitable for many environments. Acidic or alkaline environments also make this material an ideal choice since its resistance against most common metals and chemicals makes it convenient.

Duplex stainless steel has become increasingly popular within the oil and gas industry due to its superior corrosion and mechanical properties. Furthermore, this material comes in various grades to meet specific industry demands.

Advantages of Lean Duplex Stainless Steel
Stainless steels are widely utilized in various industrial settings due to their corrosion resistance, strength, ...
... and ability to tolerate stress without deformation or damage.

Selecting the ideal stainless steel grade is critical, and duplex stainless steel offers many of the same benefits of both austenitic and ferritic grades while with fewer disadvantages.

Forta LDX 2101 can be an ideal choice for many projects involving storage tanks at refineries, chemical plants and processing industries, including storage and fermentation tanks for an ethanol producer in Lima, Ohio, who built storage and fermentation tanks from Forta LDX 2101 back in 2007. One early adopter was an ethanol producer in Lima who created their tanks out of Forta LDX 2101 in 2007.

Their high mechanical strength enables thinner walls and lighter beams when designing API 650 tanks, thus reducing order sizes, lifting requirements during construction, welding time and filler metal consumption, thus decreasing the total lifetime costs of projects.

Applications of Lean Duplex Stainless Steel
Duplex stainless steel alloys are increasingly becoming the material of choice for pipework systems and pressure vessels used in offshore oil and gas industries, offering improved corrosion resistance and higher strength than standard austenitic stainless steels (such as 304 or 316).

Chrome molybdenum and nitrogen alloys are well known for their balance between chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen composition. This leads to low nickel levels and makes these alloys cost-effective solutions for many applications.

These alloys are also highly resistant to chloride stress corrosion and pitting corrosion, with their high strength enabling thinner sections without adding unnecessary weight or decreasing efficiency.

Lean duplex stainless steels have many applications, from heat exchangers and storage tanks, water treatment systems and fire/blast walls on offshore platforms to aquaculture equipment. Furthermore, lean duplex steels are resistant to crevice corrosion - something austenitic stainless steels may experience more often.

Requirements for Lean Duplex Stainless Steel
Lean Duplex Stainless Steel was recently developed for less demanding applications in the building and construction industries, such as corrosion resistance comparable to standard austenitic grades but with twice their strength. This innovation can reduce production costs significantly while improving performance and durability.

These steels also boast higher minimum yield stress values (compared to austenitic stainless steels), are suitable for thinner sections, and have significantly less weight.

Lean duplex grades UNS 32101 and S32202 offer resistance against crevice corrosion up to 50degC and contain 200ppm chloride concentration, making them suitable for gas production environments.
