What Is Group Discussion?

A group discussion is a type of discussion in which two or more people share their thoughts on a specific topic. For a better understanding of "What is Group Discussion," we must first define the terms "Group" and "Discussion."

A group is a collection of people who meet on a regular basis and collaborate to achieve a common goal. A discussion is a process in which two or more people exchange their thoughts and ideas on a specific topic or situation.

Group discussions are used to assess a person's personality, behavior, and thoughts while working in a group.

It is a premier tool for selecting candidates for admissions, scholarships, and jobs, among other things, in which a topic is presented to the group members.

Meanwhile, the panelists observe and judge their intellectual, social, leadership, and communicative behaviors in a comparative context, attempting to gauge some of the personality traits and/or skills that they desire.

Process of Group Discussion
Applicants will be notified of the GD topic, which will be discussed among the group of candidates for a set period of time. They are also given some time to gather ideas and information on the subject. Because time is limited, it is up to the group to manage it during the discussion.

The following are some of the personality traits that the panel values:

* Assertiveness
* Motivational skills
* Thinking out of the box

The reason institutes put you through GDs after testing your technical and conceptual skills is to see if you fit well in their environment. How you interact with and learn from those around you, and how you can excel as a manager in the future.

Companies use GDs to learn more about your personality. They are primarily interested in how you communicate with others, how open-minded you are, your participation skills, and how you can contribute to groups of organizations.

So practice your verbal communication, adherence to norms, cooperation, and nonverbal behaviors in preparation for GD.

How to Crack a GD?
Be Positive
A positive attitude reflects self-assurance. However, don't be too dominant in establishing your point. Throughout the discussion, make sure to use positive gestures and language.

Initiative
If you have a good understanding of the topic, go ahead and start the discussion. A lack of understanding of the subject may also catch you off guard, so take the initiative and make a well-thought-out start to make the right impression.

Eye Contact
Maintaining eye contact with group members throughout the conversation sends a positive message to the evaluators. When you fail to make eye contact with your audience, you appear less credible and confident. People stop looking at you and listening to you.

Let Others Also Speak
Instead of interrupting someone who is speaking, take notes and discuss after the person has finished. Try to include quiet members in the discussion by soliciting their feedback.

Listen
It pays to be able to listen well. Understanding what others are pointing to clarifies the point and allows you to frame an understandable conversation. When it's your turn to speak, be courteous and sensible.

Do Not Get into Excess Details
Keep your points brief and try to summarize your subject analysis in a few words. Because there is a time limit, avoid deviating from the topic and goal. Always make an effort to get the conversation back on track. This will reflect on your ability to concentrate.

Finally, structure and summarize all of your points in order to present your final opinion on the subject.
