Long-range Shooting – A Preference For Some

All hunters and shooters have their preferences, choices and requirements. Some like wing-shooting activities in the South, others may be enjoying competition shooting all over the US more, whereas the long-range shooters also have their preferences and requirements.

The long-range shooter is often driven by a desire to hit the tiniest target from far away, for the thrill of the precision and accuracy that this activity demands. It is, for the shooter, a much greater feeling of satisfaction when they hit their target from some distance – not 200 yards or 300 yards or even 600 yards, but distances of up to and over 1 000 yards. This category, the long-distance shooters, experiences a special feeling of satisfaction when they know they can outclass and outmanoeuvre their target – normally a buck – from far off.

Many hunters can be successful at 100 yards, or 200/300 yards, what could loosely be termed as short distances, fewer at intermediate distances of up to, say, 600 yards, and probably only a select few at 1 000 yards or more. It is a great feeling for the hunter and shooter when they achieve their goal ...
... of being successful over the long range. For most of these, it is about the challenge, and understandably so since being a successful hunter or shooter is about challenging yourself, measuring your ability against yourself – and often also against the ability and skills of your mates or others in the hunting party.

Therefore rifles that are marketed with the long-range shooter’s requirements in mind, such as the PROOF Research, should well be considered. They are produced to support the demands of the long-range shooter, for example, offering a lightweight aspect and features that make them stand out above many other standard hunting rifles. It is known that one of the important features of this rifle is the fact that it comes with a match-grade carbon fibre barrel that sets it apart from many others for its lightweight qualities and easy handling, which can be a deciding factor for the long-range shooter that may find this feature just more preferable, even though the brand also sells stainless-steel barrels. This is not all.

MOA is often mentioned too. MOA refers to ‘Minute of Angle,’ with sub-MOA often referred to as a goal for the shooter. This simply refers to the accuracy with which you shoot. One MOA means being able to group several shots all within a certain small space. For example, at 100 yards one MOA will require you to group your shots all within one-inch diameter. This means you have to pair your rifle not only with a good sight but also look at rifles which are known to have been manufactured with such issues in mind.

The long-range shooter will do well by studying technique, for example how to compensate for issues such as bullet drop, which becomes an issue over longer distances as opposed to shorter distances, for example. Atmospheric conditions such as wind and wind drift must also be considered, such as the reigning temperature on the day, inclination, which refers to the up or the down angle at which the shooter takes their shot, and also the performance of the cartridges you are using. These are only some of the issues to be considered by the long-range shooter.

Experience is a good teacher, but then so – and probably better – is attending shooting school where the experts teach shooters how to become good long-range shooters. Therefore the most valuable tips would be: choose a good long-range rifle with appropriate ammunition and consider attending shooting school where everything the long-range shooter needs to know, is taught.
