Cannes (Canas in Provençal) (pronounced "can") is a city in southern France, located on the French Riviera, in the Alpes-Maritimes department. Cannes is an exclusive, sun-drenched town in the south of France, in a prime location on the French Riviera. One of the most elitist and expensive areas in Europe, Cannes is an international symbol of luxury, extravagance and wealth. The beautiful town is packed full of boutiques, luxury hotels and celebrity property. The reputation of Cannes is famously enforced each year with the glamorous Cannes Film Festival in May. Its population is above 72,000. The city is also famous for its various luxury shops, restaurants, and hotels.

Cannes history

From the early 2nd century BC the Lingurian Oxybii established a settlement here known as Aegitna, even today historians are unsure what the name means. This area was a fishing village used as a port of call between the so called Lernis Islands.

It also became the scene of violent conflict between the troops of Othos and Vitellius in 69th AD.

By the 10th century the town was known as Canua. The name may derive from ...
... "canna", a reed. Canua was probably the site of a small Ligurian port, and later a Roman outpost on Le Suquet hill, suggested by Roman tombs discovered the place over here. Le Suquet housed an 11th-century tower where the city now stands. The insecurity caused by the invasion Saracens to the Lerins islands forced the monks to settle on the mainland, at the Suquet. Construction of a castle in 1035 fortified the city by then known as Cannes, and by the end of the 11th century construction was started on two towers on the Lerins islands. They were massively built which took one century to build and the other one, three.

From the Middle Ages until the early 19th century, Cannes was here established as a small agricultural and fishing village. Beginning in the 1830s, foreign and French aristocrats built vacation homes in the area, gradually turning Cannes into a resort town. Beautiful Cannes Apartment started coming up but the growth was not rapid until the next few years.

The man responsible for Cannes growth is Lord Henry Peter Brougham (1778-1868). A respected and talented British politician at his time, he discovered Cannes in 1834, on his way to Italy. He bought land at the Croix des Gardes and constructed the villa Eleonore-Louise. His work to improve living conditions attracted the English aristocracy, who also built winter residences. After having bought land to the west of the Suquet he used his many contacts in French politics to help develop the French Riviera.

At the end of the 19th century, several railways were completed, which brought in more industrial development to the city. This also prompted the arrival of the newly invented streetcars. In Cannes, many projects stared out such as the Carlton Hotel on the famous Promenade de la Croisette, the rue d'Antibes and the Boulevard Carnot. After the closure of the Casino des Fleurs (hotel Gallia), a famous luxury establishment was built for the rich winter clientele; the Casino Municipal next to the pier Albert-Edouard. This casino was demolished and replaced by the new Palace in 1979. There was a gradual raise and race for Apartment in Cannes which meant more business for the Cannes Accommodation for the visitors.

With the 20th century coming new luxury hotels such as the Miramar and the Martinez stood up. The city got modernized with many comfortable amenities like a sports centre, street cars, a post office, and schools. There were more Americans and fewer fewer British and German tourists after the First World War. Winter tourism gave way to summer tourism which paved path to the summer casino at the Palm Beach.
