Those who caught a cold have been infected with a virus that causes inflammation of the nasal passages, throat, sinuses, and windpipe. There are more than 200 distinct viruses that can trigger a cold. The rhinovirus is the most prevalent cause of the common cold.

The term "common" is used to describe the cold because it's common. There's a good chance that colds will outnumber all other illnesses you have during your life. Children under five are more likely than adults to be sick four or more times a year with a common cold. Hence, you should consult a doctor for medicine and diet for cold and cough.

Medicine for Cold & Cough

The symptoms of a common cold may be alleviated with any number of over-the-counter (OTC) medications. Yet, some of these drugs shouldn't be given to kids. Before giving your kid any over-the-counter medicine, talk to their doctor. Do not use cold cough medicines for more than one symptom at a time.

In addition to rest and fluids, the following medications may help alleviate your cold symptoms:

Pain relievers:

Headaches and fevers may be alleviated by taking an NSAID medicine for cough and cold such as ibuprofen (Advil) and acetaminophen (Tylenol).

Decongestants:

Take drugs containing pseudoephedrine (such as Contac Cold 12 Hour and Sudafed) or phenylephrine (such as Sudafed PE) to alleviate stuffiness.

Antihistamines:

Sneezing and nasal congestion may be alleviated by diphenhydramine (Benadryl) and other antihistamines.

Expectorants:

Mucus may be thinned and loosened with expectorant tablets for cold and cough like guaifenesin (Mucinex).

Cough suppressants:

Cough suppressants like dextromethorphan (included in products like Robitussin and Vicks DayQuil Cough) and codeine are available. Pediatricians and other medical professionals seldom prescribe these for kids less than 5.

Foods to Eat During Cold & Cough

Fortunately, foods for cold and cough may help you avoid these problems and heal that persistent cough. Several foods are rich in qualities that strengthen the immune system.

Soup:

This is ideal for a cold because of its anti-inflammatory properties. It's a simple way to get all the minerals, vitamins, protein, and calories the body needs. To help you recover, your body will need extra fluids and electrolytes when you’re not keeping well. A cup of hot soup can help clear it immediately if you have a blocked nose.

Citrus foods:

Vitamin C is the strongest defence against catching a cold. Unfortunately, there is no foolproof way to avoid the chill. You won't feel like eating or drinking much when you have a cold. Under these conditions, citrus fruits like lemons, oranges, and limes may be used as remedies for cold and cough to speed up the recovery time from cold symptoms.

Germ fighters:

Kale, broccoli, red onions, green tea, and blueberries are some examples of antibacterial foods. The antioxidant quercetin found in these is effective against the common cold. They are a great source of fiber, protein, and nutrients.

Ginger:

When you have a cold, a hot cup of ginger tea might act like cold cough syrup that soothes your throat pain. Your throat will feel better, and you'll be able to breathe easier. There is evidence that the anti-viral properties of these spicy roots may be used to stave against the common cold.

Conclusion

Unfortunately, there is no cure for the common cold, but the symptoms are treatable with common cold cough medicine that last for up to ten days. You may recover more quickly if you stay in bed, drink plenty of water, and stay away from others. If you are still not feeling better after ten days, you should make an appointment with a healthcare practitioner at Livlong.
