The Impact of Rising ...
... Fuel Costs on Logistics
With the advent of e-commerce platforms in India, the logistics industry has begun to reach its horizon and to get-going last-mile deliveries to its customers, it needs favorable storage space to make deliveries and returns speedier. The lack of warehouses may disturb the supply chain. Diverse types of goods, need various kinds of vehicles to carry. The connectivity of roads, railways, and waterways still seems a challenge due to border issues. Therefore, the government is also working to cope up with these difficulties by introducing other new policies like PM-GATI Shakti Programme, 2021 whose aim is to build multimodal connectivity infrastructure in various economic zones. The government has developed a new digital master planning tool to keep a check on the complete database and will also help in dynamic mapping on real-time projects. The map will be built on open-source technologies and hosted by the government cloud i.e., MEGHRAJ. This platform will function as an umbrella for the database and will bring transparency. E-way Bill has magnified the flexibility of inter-state movement of goods; the seller/consignor, the recipient, and the transporter are assigned unique bill numbers (EBN) to avoid long-queue processes of documentation and licensing thus helping in increasing the efficiency of real-time deliveries. New pacts and projects are enhancing the efficacy of the logistics industry every day. CJ Darcl Logistics partnering with the government in combatting all the challenges and is looking forward to leading the industry.
Biggest Challenges Faced by Logistics Companies
The Indian logistics sector has been on a path of steady and robust growth for the past few years, in pursuance of the rising retail and manufacturing ecosystem in the country. Thereof, the foremost challenges that the logistics sector faces today, due to poor infrastructure and technology, and lack of digitization.
Physical infrastructure hampers transportation which as a result impacts supply chain management. The higher cost of fuel exponentially hikes the freight charges which would indirectly impacts, the Indian logistics companies and businesses to stay afloat. The economic and socio-political changes would also result in fluctuation of the prices, and in turn, affects the costs and disrupts the supply chain. Although the logistics industry has drifted towards a more tech-friendly environment, the industry still faces challenges in safeguarding the documentation, which would be paramount in substantiating claims at the time of arbitrations and litigations. Lack of accurate data at the time of documentation along with several manual processes further aggravates this problem.
Trained manpower, which is very weak at a practical level, i.e., IT, driving schools, loading, and unloading is essential as a part of logistics training. The disorganized nature of the logistics sector in India, its poor integration system and its perception as a manpower-heavy industry, and its lack of adequate training institutions have led to a shortfall in skilled management and client service personnel. Poor facilities and management are the reason for high levels of loss, damage, and deterioration of stock, mainly in the perishables sector. It is essential to prioritize research and development so that the weaknesses in the industry can be taken care of and could eliminate the voids of supply chain management.
