The great majority of people understand that they should visit the dentist once a year for a checkup and cleaning. These examinations help your dentist monitor your dental health and prevent minor issues from becoming severe problems.

But, every now and again, more than yearly visits may be needed. If you have a dental emergency, you shouldn't wait until your yearly exam if you have a dental emergency. Urgent dental treatment may be necessary to prevent missing teeth, infections, and even death.

The following paragraphs list four dental emergency symptoms to be on the lookout for. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, you should contact your dentist right away.

1. One or more of your teeth have become loose
Adults should not have any loose teeth. By the time you reach adulthood, your teeth will have evolved into the tools you use daily to consume food. The tooth fairy is unlikely to pay you a visit anytime soon.

A wobbly tooth may suggest dental injury. Sports-related injuries or car accidents might cause these issues. You may not even experience pain after a car accident or sports ...
... injury. However, an underlying nerve or jaw damage that isn't causing symptoms might still occur.

An infection might also cause a loose tooth in a specific area. In this case, you must consult a top dentist to determine what is contributing to the infection. They will take X-rays and do an oral exam to establish whether oral infections or tooth decay are contributing factors to the problem.

If you lose a tooth as an adult, it won’t grow back. Some of the ways you can replace it include rather invasive procedures such as dental implants or bridges. As a result, it is preferable to avoid missing teeth in adulthood in the first place.

2. You have an abscessed tooth
An abscessed tooth is a very painful and serious dental problem. Untreated decay and infections are two of the most common causes. An injury to your tooth is another prevalent culprit.

There are two types of dental abscesses. The first type is a periapical abscess, which originates at the tooth root. The other type, periodontal abscess, forms in the gum tissue around the tooth.

Symptoms include fever, pus, and swollen glands. You should see your dentist because different kinds of infections might cause these symptoms. The specialist may perform a root canal to eliminate the infection.

Risks associated with abscessed teeth must be taken into account. If they are not treated in a timely, they may become life-threatening. The infection may spread to neighboring tissues or result in an infection of the bones.

A bacterial infection called Ludwig angina may appear following an abscess. This kind of cellulitis causes the tongue and throat to swell. If not treated right away, it can cause asphyxia and death.

3. You suffer from a severe toothache
If your toothache is not severe, you can take care of it yourself at home. However, a dentist can offer emergency toothache treatment if the pain is too bad. Because the course of treatment will depend on what is causing the symptoms, you must get a proper diagnosis as soon as you can.

If you have trouble chewing and are unable to eat or drink anything hot or cold, your toothache is likely severe. Toothaches that go untreated can quickly become dangerous. Your dentist may recommend antibiotics to remove any existing bacteria. Moreover, medication can always stop any infections from spreading.

4. You’ve developed chronic headaches
There are several causes of headaches. Sometimes a headache can be brought on by something seemingly innocent as skipping a meal. But when your headaches start to become chronic and recurrent, it becomes a cause for concern. This typically indicates that there's a more serious issue at hand.

It seems logical that dental pain might cause headaches since your mouth and head are connected. If jaw or mouth pain is not managed, it may manifest as headaches. Even something as basic as teeth grinding at night might result in headaches during the day. If this applies to you, your dentist might recommend that you wear a mouth guard when sleeping.
