A business continuity management system can be implemented, maintained, and improved by any organization, regardless of size, industry, or nature, thanks to the international standard ISO 22301:2019 - Security and Resilience - Business Continuity Management Systems - Requirements. The standard specifies the structure and requirements for a BCMS, which ultimately supports an organization's capacity to avoid, prepare as well as respond and minimize the chance of disruptions. Organizations that have such a system in place benefit from lower costs, less negative impact on business performance when something goes wrong, strengthened resilience, a better understanding of their business, and the capacity to reassure various stakeholders, including clients, that the organization has reliable systems in place for business continuity.

The management system standard of ISO 22301:2019 has many elements that may be recognizable to users of ISO 9001 and ISO 14001. The Plan-Do-Check-Act (PCDA) cycle, ISO 22301 documents, managerial review, constant improvement, and participation of qualified individuals are all examples of this. Most ...
... clauses in ISO 22301:2019 contain PCDA ideas. Thus, if an organization wants to establish a Business Continuity system within the organization, there are four basic concerns you should consider to begin with the preparation. Along with that, if you are considering ISO 22301 certification, the information you gather will provide evidence of good planning so is an investment worth making.

What parts of the organization do you wish to focus on?
Some businesses are simple, also they operate from a single location with a small number of employees. Similarly, other organizations are more complicated, with several locations, different shifts, and possibly people employed by more than one organization on site. Define the systems you operate and the locations where data is stored in the context of information security. It is critical to narrow the scope of the system you intend to build so that you can establish and manage recovery plans for each of these scenarios.

Where do you want to start?
Although it may seem silly to ask, many businesses mistakenly believe that incident management plans—which are implemented in the event of a small accident or IT malfunction, such as when email services go down for an hour or someone gets hurt—are the same as business continuity plans. These are not incidents related to business continuity. Hence, business continuity events are significant incidents that potentially endanger the organization's existence, and after they are over, procedures must be in place to restore the company to the condition it was in before the disaster. For instance, how would your organization begin to serve its clients and take the necessary steps to rehouse staff and restore the infrastructure if a significant fire occurred and the facility was largely destroyed or could not be used? What should an organization do if malware or other damage affects its servers or networks? Selecting a starting point for the business continuity system will give it focus and allow the team members working on it to achieve their goals.

What alternatives do an organization has for recovery?
After a disruption or significant incident, a business continuity strategy must be implemented. Organizations can make decisions on some choices and use their creativity and flexibility as needed. Several instances could be:

• Constructing modular structures for temporary offices
• Working from home or serviced offices provided by third parties
• Temporarily sending non-urgent employees home or on vacation

Many businesses will use cloud data services, which have a backup as part of the service. If this is not the case, businesses should have plans in place to acquire new equipment, upload data from backups, and start setting up networks for new computers. Some organizations may even have resources that may be utilized in an emergency that is located far from their primary working locations. A power plant, for instance, might keep a fleet of tough vehicles that can access the main site and assist emergency responders.

Whom do you bring on board to work with you?
Since the majority of organizations don't operate in isolation, any business continuity strategy will be supported by partnerships and cooperative working. Private businesses may reach agreements with other groups, however, if your corporation offers public services, coordination with councils, emergency services, or civil defense authorities will be appropriate. Transport businesses that coordinate shared yards or warehouse arrangements are a couple of examples of this. This type of redundancy can be easily established in cases when the organization operates from various locations by transferring all operations from one location to another.

Also, businesses want to think about which of their suppliers can deliver essential goods and services, such as laptops, phones, or server equipment. It may be wise to buy and keep a minimal amount on hand in cases where big purchases are likely to be needed. The local community's input should be a key consideration in every planning since people are more likely to support an organization, they have a positive feeling about it. So, combining all of this knowledge can help an organization develop and plan its business continuity strategy, especially if ISO 22301 certification is something you're thinking about. Planning effectively may improve a system and help save time and money.
