Expansion joints, also known as metal bellows, are crucial components of piping and ductwork systems. They are designed to absorb thermal expansion or contraction and other types of movement to prevent damage and failure.
In this blog, we will discuss the importance of metal expansion joints, their applications, and their various types.
Expansion Joints - A short introduction
Metal Expansion Joints, also known as metal bellows or compensators, are mechanical devices used to absorb thermal expansion or contraction in piping systems, ductwork, and other industrial applications. They are designed to accommodate movement in a system caused by temperature changes, vibration, or other factors that could cause stress, fatigue, or failure of the system.
Metallic expansion joints are made of one or more convoluted bellows made of metal, usually stainless steel, that are connected to flanges or other fittings. The ...
... bellows are designed to flex and compress as the system expands and contracts, allowing the system to maintain its integrity and prevent damage.
DMA Bellows is one of the leading metallic expansion joint manufacturers and hose fitting manufacturers in India . Our state-of-the-art production facility allows us to manufacture metal expansion joints and bellows with superior quality and accuracy.
The Types of Expansion Joints:-
Stainless steel expansion joints are widely used in industries such as oil and gas, chemical processing, power generation, and HVAC systems, among others. They are critical components that help ensure the safe and reliable operation of piping and ductwork systems.
Some common types of metal expansion joints include:
Axial Expansion Joints, which are designed to absorb movement in the axial direction, or parallel to the length of the bellows.
Lateral expansion joints, which are designed to absorb movement in the lateral direction, or perpendicular to the length of the bellows.
Universal expansion joints, which are designed to absorb movement in both the axial and lateral directions.
Gimbal expansion joints, which are designed to allow for angular movement in a system. The use of two pairs of hinges attached to a common floating gimbal ring allows for angular movement in any plane. The gimbal ring, hinged, and pins are intended to limit the pressure thrust caused by internal pressure and shear forces. Gimbal rings can be round or square.
Single Unrestrained Joints:- These expansion joints are constructed with a single bellows element and end connections.
As a Metal Expansion Joint manufacturer, DMA Bellows also sells this model that absorbs all movements in any length of piping regardless of accessories such as liners and covers, but it is primarily used to absorb axial movements.
Single Tied Expansion Joint:- Tied expansion joints are made with a fixed overall length in mind. The tie rods are attached in such a way that axial movement is eliminated and the ends of the EJ remain parallel at all times. This configuration has only two degrees of freedom, which are lateral in two axes.
Elbow Expansion Joints:- An elbow pressure balanced expansion joint is intended to absorb externally imposed axial movement without adding pressure to the system. This is accomplished by connecting two bellows at line pressure and acting in opposite directions.
As a reputed metallic expansion joint manufacturer in India and bellows manufacturers, all our products are manufactured to the highest standards of quality and safety, ensuring that they meet the requirements of all industries.
