Since I’m a dentist, many patients ask me about smile-friendly diets. They aim to find foods to keep their pearly whites nice and healthy. This goal is admirable, and I’m happy to assist with it. That said, I wish more people would consider their gums, too; meals also help or harm gum tissue. I’ve therefore decided to write a bit about the matter. Here, then, are four great foods you should eat to make your gums healthier.

Oily Fish
If you’re a seafood lover, I have some good news for you: Not only can fish taste great, but they also benefit your gum tissue!

You see, salmon and oily fish contain loads of omega-3 fatty acids. Those nutrients, when ingested, reduce swelling and inflammation in the gums. They also work well when paired with fish protein, essential for healing damaged tissue.

Even better, the oiliest fish are filled with vitamins A and D. These protect the gums from infection and promote calcium absorption and bone growth.

Grass-Fed Beef & Chicken
In recent years, nutritionists have emphasized how free-range meat is low-calorie, tasty, etc. Less talked about, though, ...
... is its ability to strengthen your gums.

The reality is that grass-fed beef and chicken are excellent in promoting gum health. Unlike processed varieties, these meats are rich in vitamin A and omega-3 fatty acids. Plus, they’re low in unhealthy fats that contribute to gum disease.

Fresh Fruits & Veggies
As it turns out, fruits and veggies are more than flavorful snacks and sides. Prepared well, they can keep gums clean and healthy.

For starters, these foods are crunchy and full of fiber. Chewing them thus lowers the risk of plaque near the gumline.

More importantly, fruits and vegetables have nutrients that support the immune system. Such include vitamin C and beta carotene, which have anti-inflammatory properties.

Dairy Products
Everyone knows milk builds strong bones – a great effect on your teeth. However, did you know it and other dairy products can strengthen gum tissue?
The reason stems from dairy’s probiotics. These microorganisms form a film in your mouth, protecting it from harmful bacteria. As a result, milk, yogurt, and cheeses can reduce the risk of cavities and gum disease.

Next time you want a healthy snack, consider a glass of milk or a slice of cheese. The items will protect your teeth, especially when you can’t brush them after a meal.

Ultimately, a smile-friendly diet should keep your teeth and gums equally safe. To find the right one, then, talk to your local dental provider. They’ll be happy to help out!
