The post-pandemic recovery job is continuing for tourism on the Costa del Sol, at least if newly released statistics are to go by.
As SUR in English has recently reported, the National Statistics Institute (INE) for Spain has issued data in relation to the number of visitors and overnight stays in hotels during the month of July. The data showed that Málaga province fared well in this regard, with people from both within and beyond Spain heading to the region’s towns, cities, and beaches in strength over the summer.
To be more specific, as far as Málaga province – which includes the Costa del Sol – was concerned, slightly more than 2.5 million overnight stays were recorded for the month. During the corresponding period of 2021, there were just over 1.8 million hotel stays.
With the last full year before the pandemic hit Europe – 2019 – recording 2.5 million hotel stays in Málaga province during the month of July, it can finally be said that, at least in terms of this specific measure, tourism has recovered from the effects of the coronavirus crisis.
What else have we learned lately about ...
... tourism in this part of Spain?
The above are by no means the only statistics to have recently been released indicating an uptick in tourism on the Costa del Sol.
One particularly heartening story is that of a resurgence in foreign visitors to Málaga province; while the number of visitors from within Spain who spent a night in a local hotel during July exceeded 950,000, in the case of tourists from other countries, it was more than 1.5 million.
Another SUR in English article published in the last few days suggested that recent local hotel occupancy levels have actually been higher than during the summer of 2019. According to the Aehcos hoteliers’ association, some establishments on the Costa del Sol saw their occupancy rates exceed 90% in August.
