Further, they need sulfur for synthesizing protein. They also require magnesium for chlorophyll formation. Some additional elements necessary for plant growth involve Ca, Fe, Na, Mn, Co, Cu, and B. Plants can get all these additional nutrients from fertilizers. Fertilizers can also help treat soil deficiencies.

Type of fertilizers

Fertilizers are available in three prominent types(N-P-K) fertilizers as follows:

Nitrate (N) fertilizers

These are nitrogen-based fertilizers and are among the largest group of fertilizers. These are the most prominent type and require multiple processes for their production.

Nitrate fertilizers require raw materials like nitrogen and hydrogen, available from methane or natural gas (CH4). These fertilizers require the mixing of both elements at high pressure and temperature. The product output is ammonia. Ammonia is further oxidized to form nitric acid, resulting in ammonium nitrate’s mineral fertilizers after mixing with urea and CO2. One-third of the nitrate fertilizers involve urea ammonium nitrate (UAN), a result of mixing urea, AN, and water.

Phosphorus ...
... (P) fertilizers

These fertilizers require phosphate rock which is a type of ore. After treating the phosphate concentrate, it is essential to treat it with (H2SO4) or sulfuric acid. After treating it with H2SO4, the contrate becomes phosphoric acid or (SSP) superphosphate. The acid is further added to ammonia and results in the production of (MAP) mono ammonium phosphate or (DAP) diammonium phosphate. One can manufacture TSP triple superphosphate fertilizers by concentrating phosphoric acid. One can also further concentrate phosphate.

Potassium (K) fertilizers
These fertilizers also come from mining ores like potash rock which is a potassium carbonate and potassium salt amalgam. The process of making K-type fertilizers involves concentrating potash. The next steps involve treating the potash concentrate to create a solution of potassium chloride. The solution produces (MOP) muriate of potash and (KN) potassium nitrate on mixing it with nitric acid. It also produces (SOP) sulphate of potash after mixing it with sulphuric acid.

Selecting the right type of fertilizer

Fertilizers are available in different types, and one can select from a wide range depending on the plant or soil requirements. One can use single, blended, or compound nutrient fertilizers. The blended and compound fertilizers are further available in multiple compositions per their nutrient ratios essential for crop growth.

The fertilizer choice is dependent on the nutrient requirement.

Every year farmers apply nitrogen to crops. The quantity depends on the crop and yield. In the case of potassium and phosphorus, the available nutrient reserves deposit in the soil. The fertilizer amount is dependent on the soil. Hence, one must carry out soil analysis.

Fertilizer manufacturing

Manufacturing of fertilizer requires multiple processes as follows:
It involves manufacturing ammonia from hydrogen and nitrogen from naphtha, coal, or natural gas.
The next step involves mining potassium chloride, crushing the ore, and purifying it. The sulphuric rock and phosphate rock mostly calcium phosphate is essential for manufacturing phosphoric acid. Sulphuric acid is made using sulphur available from natural gas and oil.
Later, phosphoric acid and phosphate rock are used for manufacturing calcium dihydrogen phosphate or triple superphosphate.
Further nitric acid and ammonia are essential for manufacturing ammonium nitrate.
Ammonia and phosphoric acid are essential to produce ammonium phosphates.

Final thoughts

Fertilizers are essential elements for farming. These elements work as plant food and are responsible for offering nutrients to plants that the environment fails to provide. The rich nutrients in fertilizers help plants. One must utilize miner fertilizers to balance the nutrient level in the soil.

Each year farmers utilize fertilizers to replenish the soil and its depleted reserves. However, it is essential to use high-quality fertilizers. Hence, a fertilizer company must use top-quality raw materials and speciality chemicals from chemical companies in Mumbai like Amizara Speciality Chemicals.

The chemical supplier in Mumbai is a leading chemical company offering pure and technical grade of speciality chemicals.
