What Do You Miss About High School?

High school represented the last days of freedom for students before moving on to college or full time jobs. There are no cares or worries, simply have fun and perhaps work a part time job. It reminds me of movies that have a high school or teen theme, where every group has their corner of the school to congregate and visit. The scholars, the cheerleaders, the sports teams, the shy students, the pep rally squad, etc. It amazes me how this pattern repeats itself year after year, even today.

When I was in high school, I had to ride a city bus that would deposit me in the downtown area, just a short walk up an impressive hill to school. In the downtown area was a restaurant called Ray's and we would meet there in the mornings before school. We would have to order food or drink to keep our booth. The restaurant was packed with other kids like me and then we would all walk up the hill to school together.

Who does not look forward to lunch time? This was a time to sit with friends and even though we just met at the restaurant, we found plenty to talk about.

Spring time meant skipping school and heading out for ...
... the beach. This beach had sand dunes that we could climb and settle our blanket in the valley of the dunes. We would lie out in the sun all day, visit with other groups of students and then go home with a sun tan or a burn not thinking how obvious it was we did not attend school that day.

Other memories for me:

1. Football games. I attended these games more for socializing than actually watching the game. I remember standing around and talking and drinking, of course, hot cocoa to keep warm.

2. Riding in a car to school, not having to take the bus anymore.

3. Parties on the weekend.

4. Basketball games in the winter.

5. Trying to choose a career.

6. Applying for colleges.

7. Becoming the first graduating class in a new school building (built on a toxic waste dump site).

All in all, high school was a very formative time in our lives, whether it was good or bad. How did it affect you?
