The use of a wire or braided line to transport downhole tools or equipment in a wellbore is referred to as Slickline in Grande Prairie. A wire was initially used in a wellbore as a measuring tool. Sticks were used to measure depth in the early wells that were dug by hand. The distance stepped off after placing the stick on the ground. Occasionally, a surveyor's chain would be used for significant measurements.
Wire cable was used to overcome the rope's flaws. It was now necessary to develop a method for determining the hole's depth. Water was typically present in the hole to help soften the limestone, clay, and rock. If any driller uses a marked rope, it will be wet when it emerged from the hole and will rot while being trundled up on a drum or spool used for a winch. Drillers initially used bulky cable, but as it stretched while being inserted into the hole, the weight of the cable either broke it or caused it to stretch past its markings.
A steel tape that’s flat with markings was used by some drillers around the similar time that cable and rope of Slickline in Grande Prairie ...
... were being used. As weight exceeded the tape's cross-sectional strength, it would split as it was being dropped into the wellbore, the same issue it shared with the cable and rope. The use of wire after that provided several benefits. The wire was placed on a drum that could be raised and lowered using a winding handle to achieve this.
A winding handle with a gear ratio was added to the Slickline Grande Prairie as the depth of the wellbores increased to help lift the heavier loads. To slow the line's advance into the hole at this point, a brake hand had been added to the other side of the drum. The line was pulled out of the hole using a steam-powered engine, which was the main source of power at the time.
A side-winder, which consisted of a spool of wire on a drum that slid out on a frame from the bed of a pickup truck, was created from these early efforts. A drum, sheave, or cathead was attached to the left rear wheel, which was then jack-knifed, and a rope was wrapped around it to reach the wire drum.
Modern Slickline Grande Prairie equipment is still designed and used largely in accordance with the same principles. However, slickline now has a much wider range of applications due to deeper wellbore depths and more sophisticated downhole completion machinery. Slicklines will eventually be used to access almost every wellbore. Slickline access may be necessary for the installation or maintenance of upper wellbore components on even highly deviated or horizontal wells.
