With 17.9 million deaths per year, cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading cause of death worldwide. High blood pressure, high cholesterol, and smoking are all risk factors that could lead to CVDs and stroke. Heart attacks and strokes account for more than four out of every five CVD deaths, and one-third of these deaths happen before the age of 70.

Unhealthy eating, inactivity, usage of tobacco products, and excessive use of alcohol are the main behavioral risk factors for heart disease and stroke. Individuals may experience elevated blood pressure, high blood glucose, excess blood lipids, as well as overweight and obesity as a result of behavioral risk factors.

Common cardiovascular diseases:
Coronary artery disease is the most common type of heart disease and occurs when the arteries that supply blood to the heart become narrow or are blocked. This can lead to angina, chest pain, and an increased risk of a heart attack. As per CDC database, ‘Coronary Heart Disease’ is the most common type of heart disease, killing 382,820 people in 2020. About 20.1 million adults aged 20 and older have CAD (about ...
... 7.2%).
Heart attack occurs when blood flow to the heart is suddenly blocked, causing damage to the heart muscle. In the United States, someone has a heart attack every 40 seconds. Every year, about 805,000 people in the United States have a heart attack including 605,000 first-time heart attacks and 200,000 happen to people who have already had a heart attack.
Heart failure is a condition in which the heart can no longer pump blood effectively, leading to fluid buildup in the lungs and other parts of the body. A person’s age at diagnosis may impact prognosis. Increasing age at diagnosis was significantly associated with a reduced survival time. About 6.2 million adults in the United States have heart failure, as per 2018 clinical data with 379,800 deaths.
Arrhythmias are irregular heartbeats that can be caused by a variety of factors, including heart disease, medications, and stress. The prevalence of arrhythmias is expected to be 1.5% to 5% in the general population, with atrial fibrillation being the most common. Atrial fibrillation affects at least 2.3 million people in the United States alone and is associated with increased risks of stroke and mortality
Valve disorders occur when the heart's valves don't work properly, leading to issues such as blood leaking back into the heart or not being pumped out efficiently. About 2.5% of the U.S. population has valvular heart disease, but it is more common in older adults. Nearly 25,000 deaths in the U.S. each year are due to heart valve disease from causes other than rheumatic disease
Diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases
Diagnostic tests for heart conditions include electrocardiograms (ECGs), echocardiograms, and cardiac catheterization.

ECGs measure the electrical activity of the heart, while echocardiograms use sound waves to create a visual image of the heart.
Cardiac catheterization is a procedure that involves inserting a thin tube into a blood vessel and threading it to the heart to obtain information about blood flow and pressure.
Treatment of cardiovascular diseases
Treatment for heart conditions varies depending on the specific condition and its severity.

Lifestyle changes, such as a healthy diet, regular exercise, and quitting smoking, can help reduce the risk of heart disease and improve overall heart health.
Medications, such as statins and blood pressure medications, can also help manage heart conditions.
In some cases, procedures such as angioplasty, stenting, and heart surgery may be necessary to restore blood flow to the heart or repair heart damage.

It's also important to manage other health conditions that can increase the risk of heart diseases, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes. Regular check-ups with a doctor and following a healthy lifestyle can help prevent and manage heart conditions, and improve overall health and quality of life.
