ISO/IEC 17020 conformity assessment requirements for the performance of various types of inspection bodies are created to increase confidence in the inspection bodies. Accreditation of inspection bodies may be a procedure through which an authority organization gives official recognition of technical competence for specialized inspection, supported by third-party assessment by the ISO/IEC 17020:2012 standard. This international standard ISO/IEC 17020:2012 is based on the concepts outlined in the ISO/IEC Directives.

The IAF is working on developing and updating accreditation guidelines. These forms of international agreements allow for the acceptance of inspection results between countries represented by MRA partners. Because of such reciprocal recognition, inspection organizations' inspection reports receive global acceptability after accreditation as per ISO 17020 requirements by these recognized authorities. The quality was first published in 1998, and it was revised in 2012. The 2012 version is now in use.

The ISO 17020 standard requires inspection organizations to meet stringent requirements to be accredited. ...
... An organization must fulfill the following regulations and procedures to become an ISO 17020-accredited lab.

General Requirements: General rules must be followed by laboratories that have earned ISO accreditation. It is ensured that their results are unaffected by extraneous influences by upholding independence and impartiality. Additionally, they must maintain confidentiality and protect the privacy of product and service results. These regulations are crucial because they support labs in upholding their credibility.
Structural Requirements: Labs must adhere to structural rules, including organizational requirements, management requirements, and administrative requirements, to receive ISO 17020 accreditation. An inspection body requires evidence outlining its proficiency in particular operations.

Additionally, it needs to make arrangements for future liabilities that can result from its operations, such as reserves or insurance. The nature and significance of the organization's feasible liabilities must be equivalent to these provisions. Organizations with ISO 17020 accreditation are required to submit essential ISO 17020 documents outlining the legal terms of their operations and inspections, as well as job descriptions outlining the roles, obligations, and authority of each employee. Additionally, the ISO 17020 standard mandates that inspection organizations deliver documents outlining their reporting lines and obligations.

Each inspection body must have one or more technical managers who supervise inspection operations and make sure their staff complies with all applicable international standards. These managers must also have sufficient ISO 17020 auditor training to meet all regulatory requirements. This individual does not need to have the position of technical manager, but they do require inspection operations expertise and technical proficiency. If the company employs more than one person in this role, it should detail the duties of each individual. When technical managers are not present, inspection organizations need one or more deputy inspectors to oversee inspection duties.

Resource Requirements: According to the ISO 17020 standard, an inspection body must specify and document the qualifications and competencies of each person. This standard comprises standards in the following categories and applies to all persons participating in the inspection process:
• Training
• Education
• Skills
• Experience
• Technical knowledge

Each person must know the following details on the products or services they examine:

• The processes used to make the products and how the technology works
• Process operations
• Delivery of services and potential deficiencies in service delivery
• Potential defects that may occur when consumers use the product
• Any failures in the operation process

The following methods must also be documented by inspection bodies:
• Selecting inspection personnel
• Training procedures, including ongoing education
• Formally authorizing personnel
• Monitoring personnel involved in the inspection process

Inspection bodies must establish and uphold regulations for access to and use of facilities and equipment to get ISO 17020 accreditation. They must regularly calibrate equipment if it has a major impact on inspection findings, and they must maintain equipment by written instructions and procedures. Additionally, inspection bodies are required to create and adhere to procedures for choosing and approving suppliers, checking receiving goods and services, and making sure there is enough storage space. Inspection bodies must confirm that any automated equipment, including computers and other technologies, is suitable for use to maintain ISO 17020 accreditation. They follow procedures to ensure that their technology performs effectively and protects data.

Process Requirements: Inspection techniques and processes must be used with legislation, schemes or contracts, and standards or specifications for ISO 17020-accredited organizations. According to ISO 17020, they must thoroughly record any non-standard processes or procedures they utilize.

Management System Requirements: The ISO 17020 standard requires the top management of an organization to define, record, and maintain objectives and policies. Management should guarantee that the established objectives and policies are recognized and implemented at all levels of the business. Top management must also designate a lower-level manager to manage processes and procedures and report performance to top management.
