While there are many reasons why you might want to customise the look of your paper towel roll, the most popular one is probably that the store-bought variety just doesn't cut it. Sometimes you need a finer towel reel that can withstand a little more wear and tear, or one that better suits your needs and the way you want to use it. If that's the kind of thing that excites you, today we're going to tell you all you need to know about making your own white paper towel reel.

The Materials

If you're lucky enough to have a 3D printer, you can find all the material you need in one place. Indeed, most of these printers are designed to work with plastic, which is what most commonly comes in the box (printers also come with a wire coil which is perfect for making watch and jewellery parts, as well as metal wire that can be used for plumbing and motorbike parts). If you don't have a 3D printer handy, don't fret – it's still possible to get all the materials you need for this project, and quite a bit cheaper if you buy them ...
... in bulk. The only thing you're going to need to search for is some hard plastic (not metal), which is what you'll find in most home computer or printer recycling containers. We suggest looking for the ones made from polypropylene because they're both strong and lightweight, and highly recyclable. You can also use PLA if you want to cut down on some weight, but make sure that it's food-safe, or else you might end up with a bad taste in your mouth when you use it.

The Design

Before you start designing your white paper reel, it's important to first consider what kind of roll you want to make. Are you going for a traditional look and feel, or do you want to try something new? Remember: the more twists and turns you add, the better! A white paper reel with five layers of paper in different sizes and shapes wound on to a wood or plastic spool is quite a common design, but if you want something more modern, there are many other options to choose from. The sky is the limit when it comes to customising your paper towel roll, so long as you keep the white colour scheme and avoid using any metallic tones or elements.

The Finishing Touches

Once you've got your design and material sorted, it's time to move on to the fun part – the finishing touches! Of course, you won't need to do this step if you've already got a fully functional prototype, but if you're following this tutorial, you're going to want to take your time adding some extra touches so that it's perfect. First, cut the paper to the exact size of your spool using either your computer's laser printer or an office laser cutter. Next, using a hot glue gun, glue the papers in place – making sure to leave a small gap between each layer so that it doesn't become sticky once it's been sealed together. Once you've got everything in place, smooth out the top using an oven or a toaster oven. It's a good idea to let it cool down for a few minutes before using it, so that you can enjoy a clean, untangled roll of paper every time you use it.

The Final Product

Before we go any further, let's take a quick detour to explain the importance of the correct measurements. Bear in mind that your final product is going to be highly precise, so treat yourself to some quality measuring tools – a ruler, micrometer, or any other tools of a similar nature. We recommend using a laser printer to instantly generate a perfect set of digital measurements, which can then be used to scale up your paper towel reel. Don't worry – even if you don't have a 3D printer, you can still use these tools to get the precise measurements you need.

Now that you know everything you need to make your paper towel reel, it's time to start designing! Remember: practice makes perfect, so be sure to take your time and do it over and over again until you get the exact look you want. When you're done, you can test out your reel and see how it works – before you know it, you'll have a fully functional product that serves a necessary purpose and looks wonderful!
