Healthy eyesight has a vital role in education and personal development of children. Studies have shown that more than 80% of learning is visual and often, children struggle because of poor vision. Children can not recognize the difference between what they are visualizing and what their eyesight should ideally be. Here comes the role of parents! How can parents diagnose eye problems on time?

Parents can be more attentive and observant towards their kids. Distracted behavior, poor participation in school, failure to complete tasks, looking at screens from too close and experiencing difficulties in reading and writing. School eye examinations and close observation by school teachers also help and assist parents in identifying eye problems in children.

A child with suspected eye problem should undergo comprehensive eye examination by an eye specialist doctor/Ophthalmologist. While most children improve their eyesight with glasses, 20-30% of them can end up in complicated eye problems such as:

... in your other eye. If left undiagnosed, vision in the lazy eye decreases permanently in adulthood. Appropriate and timely management with glasses and patching should be done.

• Astigmatism: This is an imperfection in the curvature of the eye. Correct measurement and good construct of glasses are required to achieve perfect vision. Sometimes, it can be associated with weakness in the cornea, known as Keratoconus.

• Squint/Strabismus: Disturbed alignment of the eyes can occur in children with poor vision. Often, children with squint need glasses. A proper squint examination must be done by squint specialist to decide need for surgery.

If parents identify any of the following difficulties in their child’s vision, it is important to visit an ophthalmologist as soon as possible:
