Millions of Americans enjoy every opportunity they get to spend outdoors, whether it is to practice sports or partake in fishing, shooting, and hunting. For the hunter and wing-shooter – as well as for the fly-fishing enthusiast – there is ample opportunity to spend hours surrounded by nature, especially if you visit parts of Idaho where the mentioned activities are offered and where hunters and shooters, fly-fishers and their families and friends return to season after season.

Idaho offers a great variety of animal life and has something for everybody that visits, whether you live in the state or visit from further away. There are great opportunities in the state to offer the hunter, wing-shooter, and sporting clays enthusiast, for example, a few days away from their normal routine just to unwind, relax and take part in one or more of the many opportunities that are offered to connect with nature – and yourself.
For example, Chukar season in Idaho is one of those times that draws shooters from all over, and they start looking well ahead of the season for the ideal ranch or lodge where they can bag a number ...
... of these lovely birds to take away after their visit. Many upland birds such as pheasant, quail, and dove are popular, with chukar among the most popular. So if you find the ideal destination in, for example, Idaho, be assured of making great memories if chukar shooting is on your list of favored activities.
The chukar is, originally, native to parts of Asia and was first introduced to Idaho about 90 years ago – in 1933. The bird has a stout appearance and is one of the top choices for small bird hunting. This 13- to 14-inch-long partridge bird has a red bill, white throat, and black necklace and is easily recognizable for its physical features. The chukar has tender white meat, not unsimilar to chicken, and is, therefore, a popular table fare.
They are often found in areas of steep topography where cliff formations are prevalent and where canyon bottoms are often found; therefore often in mountainous regions such as many parts of Idaho. This bird forages on the ground and is often found where it scratches around for seeds, shoots, and whatever bulbs it can feed on. Green leaves, fiddleneck seeds, and root nodules make up some of their diets, as do small insects, especially for the younger birds.
Water, and close proximity to it, is essential for the well-being of this bird which, when the habitat is ideal, grows into a fairly plump, healthy bird – ideal for the wing-shooter. Idaho is known for its many great rivers and more than enough water sources to support good animal life – also for the chukar. Large groups of this species gather at water sources.
In addition to the availability of water, chukars need good cover and shrubs nearby to be protected from predators. They often nest on the ground, under grass and shrub cover. Hunting dogs sniff them out and offer the walk-up shooter a great opportunity to surprise the birds.
When the shooter visits a good destination such as, say, Idaho’s Lazy Triple Creek Ranch – and others - they will be offered the opportunity to hunt these birds which can be, at times, available in abundance. When you visit a good lodge, you can expect good service and accommodations too, and the support of management and staff to ensure you make wonderful memories when you come out to bunt chukar – or other birds.
Idaho is well known for its beautiful natural scenery, which is often favored by birds looking to nest in ideal surroundings with good water and food nearby, and proper cover to protect themselves. Idaho is one of the ideal destinations for the upland bird hunter.
