It Is Wise To Bring A Mechanic When Purchasing A Used Car
Everyone wants to have a car but purchasing a brand new one can leave a dent in the pocket. There are car auctions and used car dealers that can make things easier for the budget but it is also important to make sure that the car being sold is in good mechanical condition. Before making hasty decisions, bring a mechanic whom you can trust along to check out the car of choice as they are the best qualified to give unbiased tell you if the buy is a good deal or a bad one.
Certified mechanics knows most of what there is to know about the mechanical condition of a vehicle. They can determine if the engine had an overhaul or if the car is a flooded one and had been left abandoned and unclaimed. There are really some good deals out there and usually a mechanic can spot them right on. You, on the other hand, may be biased in the way a car looks like and forgo the condition of the engine.
Get a hold on the VIN of the vehicle. Search online for the number and research on the history of the vehicle - accidents, ownerships, claims and other facts that may come out that may or may not influence the price tag of the car. There ...
... are a lot of dealers who are not hesitant to give the truth about the history of the vehicle they are selling, however, more and more unscrupulous dealers are coming about, especially online, and may not even give the VIN. So search well and good and then if everything seems fine, have the mechanic look it over, engine and all.
The next thing to do would be to actually test drive the car itself. Have the mechanic with you when you do this as they can hear some sounds that may indicate trouble or a troubled future for the car. The trusted mechanic will also be able to distinguish if there is structural damage. Some simply pound and aesthetically fix to sell for a higher price. Look under the mats, are there holes patched up?
When test driving, the mechanic will always look and listen for an easy or a hard start. If it is a hard start or if the car starts coughing, don't think that this is normal, it is not. This may indicate carbon accumulation that may cause damage to certain important parts of the engine.
Listen with the mechanic the sound of the car when running idle. A gradual increase on the acceleration when neutral could reveal sounds like that of a loose fan belt. Sometimes, this gradual acceleration may bust some pipes causing leaks.
Ask the mechanic to feel the heat of the car when idle for more than three minutes. Some radiators may overheat when idle and this may mean a certain change in a radiator in the very, very near future.
