There is no denying the fact that cosmetic products are inseparable elements in the lives of almost everyone especially women. We can hardly find people who do not use some cosmetic product or the other. When these items occupy such an important position, it is imperative that we are knowledgeable about some key aspects regarding the usage of cosmetics. And, one of the most significant of those aspects is possessing knowledge about cosmetic active ingredients.

What are cosmetic active ingredients?
Cosmetic active ingredients are the primary substances present in these products. It is because of these ingredients that any cosmetic product is able to show the results for which consumers buy them. All other substances found in these products are secondary.

Here, one must not conclude that these secondary substances are unimportant; they too contribute their bit in making the products yield the desired outcome. It’s just that the active ingredients play a bigger role in making sure that consumers aren’t disappointed with the products.

Every buyer should compulsorily be aware of the active ingredients ...
... that are in a cosmetic product, and their properties. Otherwise, there is every chance that one might end up buying the wrong product that fails to resolve the given skin issue.

Some significant cosmetic active ingredients
Now that we know about the rudimentary points, let us succinctly focus on some major cosmetic active ingredients commonly used in contemporary products.

• AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acid): It’s from natural substances that extraction of AHA acids takes place. As a result, these ingredients are gentle and especially very useful for skin types that are sensitive. Alpha Hydroxy Acid exfoliates the skin and works as a brightener, too. Additionally, when you are seeking a product for preventing acne, you should consider the ones where AHA is an active ingredient.
• BHA (Butylated Hydroxyanisole): This is an anti-oxidant ingredient added as preservative to increase the shelf-life of other active ingredients. It is considered safe to use by regulators below a concentration of 0.02%. This cosmetic additive helps to make other cosmetic active ingredients effective for longer periods by its presence.
• Ceramides: Ceramides are kinds of fatty acids that are naturally made by the skin. They keep it safeguarded from damage that can be caused by external factors. Ceramides ensure that the skin is continuously moisturized, as well.
But, there could be a decline in the ceramide levels in the skin due to things such as exposure to chemicals, harsh soaps, or hot water. But, the matter is addressed when any cosmetic product loaded with ceramides is used. These products make certain that the quantity of ceramides in the skin again increases.
• Vitamin C and Vitamin E: The antioxidant effects of vitamin C are of enormous value when it comes to brightening skin and markedly delaying its aging. Similarly, even vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant that offers tremendous protection to the skin against free radicals. Hence, you are advised not to miss a cosmetic item that has either/ both of these vitamins as active ingredients.
• Retinoids: The importance of retinoids in skin care can never be overstated. Retinoids are Vitamin A based ingredient. A product where these elements are among the active ingredients successfully combats improper skin tone, wrinkles, and pigmentation.

Apart from what has been mentioned above, there are many other active ingredients included in modern-day cosmetics. Details of all those ingredients couldn’t be provided here due to a paucity of space.
