We need more power globally and scientists are looking for clean and renewable energy. Our energy-storage strategies are shaped by lithium ion batteries, a cutting edge technology that is guaranteed to be at the forefront of battery technology in the coming years.

Batteries include one or two more cells, each have a positive electrode, or cathode and a negative electrode, the anode. There is a separator and an electrolyte. Companies use different chemicals and materials affecting the batteries properties. Each battery has its own output and storage, along with how much power it provides and the number of times it can be charged and discharged, which is known as the cycling capacity.

Leading battery technology companies are experimenting to find the chemicals that are cleaner, lighter and cheaper, while offering the best power. There are three new battery technologies that are expected to power the future of the world in the years to come.

Lithium ion batteries are one of the leading contenders, they offer excellent battery storage and release, using lithium ions which move from positive to negative using ...
... the electrolyte. This technology has the positive electrodes acting as a lithium source and the negative, hosting for the lithium. There are several chemistries that have used years of electron and optimization to improve the battery source.

The material and cell designs of the lithium ion battery technology is expected to reach its limit in the coming years. Recent discoveries of new families of active materials are being locked through research and development. These new compounds are able to store more lithium in the positive and negative electrodes, combining energy and power.

Lithium ion batteries offer the highest level of energy density, a major advantage. Fast charging and temperature operating windows are being tine tuned through cell design and the chemistries used. Lithium ion shows advantages with low self discharge, long life span and excellent cycling performance.

The new generation of lithium ion batteries can be expected to be available before the solid state batteries. They will be used for energy storage systems in transportation and renewable, such as aviation, marine, railways, and off road mobility. They will offer the best in high power and safety.

The second technology for battery technologies is lithium sulfur batteries, which are lithium ions that are stored in active materials to provide stability when charging and discharging. These batteries use light active materials, sulfur in the positive electrode and metallic lithium in the negative electrode. They will have an energy density of four times that of the regular lithium ion battery, making it perfect for space and aviation industries.

Battery technology companies have already researched and are in the developmental stages of the lithium sulfur batteries, focusing on rapid deployment with a long battery life.

Solid state batteries are the batteries that are really under scrutiny by battery technology companies today. This is a shift in technology to focus on an all solid state battery, replacing the liquid electrolyte with a solid compound that allows the ions to migrate. The concept has been in development for years with global research and new solid electrolytes are now being discovered to further improve performance.

The solid state lithium ion batteries are expected to be stable and safe at all battery and cell levels. Solid electrolytes are not a fire risk when heated, unlike the liquid chemicals that are used today. It allows for high voltage and high capacity materials, offering a lighter battery with an excellent shelf life and reduced discharge.
