This generation is lucky to live in a time that allows us to light up all our rooms, our balconies, the driveway, the office, rock concerts in the park – the list goes on. In every developed society good lighting, and choices thereof, are a given. A quick look at the history of the light bulb, from the first one introduced by Thomas Edison to the LED options most people all over the world favour today, gives an idea of how the light bulb/lamp has developed and what we are offered today.

The Edison bulb, i.e. the incandescent bulb that appeared in the late 1870s, was a groundbreaking piece of technology, the benefits of which we enjoy until this day, albeit in a slightly different form. The incandescent bulb these days is no longer a favourite unless it is to highlight certain of its olde worlde charm and quaint features. This bulb has retained its original appearance and uses it for the most part.

The incandescent lamp was replaced, to a large extent, by the halogen lamp that was introduced in the late 1950s. It took over from the incandescent bulb for use in homes and offices and all other spaces that had ...
... to be lit up, except, perhaps, the CFL, the compact fluorescent lamp which is housed in a tube. When first introduced, CFL lighting was a great option to light up large internal spaces such as hospital and school passages, rooms, and offices and also in many homes where it was used to great effect in, say, kitchens.

The light is not as bright as the incandescent and the later halogen, but it offered great energy-saving qualities when compared to the incandescent. The same is true for the halogen that started to replace the incandescent bulb. New technology introduced great savings for the user that now used halogen instead of incandescent lights. The savings mentioned refer to saving on the electricity bill which, when looked at over, for example, 12 months, amounts to a handsome amount.

A few years later the most recent technology was introduced, a lighting technology that would change lighting, bulbs and their uses forever. The LED, i.e. the so-called Light-Emitting-Diode technology, first appeared in the early1960s. At first, the light emitted was offered in low-intensity red options; however, with advancing, technology LED now offers lighting colours over the complete spectrum.

And what’s more: the energy, and therefore cost, savings are truly impressive. The initial outlay may indeed be more than for other bulbs, but the LED bulb lasts for many thousands of hours, in some instances up to 50 000 hours, with no need for replacement. It is estimated that users will save over EUR 100 on every LED bulb they use for over 50 000 hours. This is a great saving. And in addition to saving on the bulb, it has to be mentioned, too, that man’s carbon footprint is drastically reduced as well.

These days the older incandescent bulb is used mainly to create an ambience of a previous time. The most popular choices are those known as the candle, or the bent candle tip, the globe and the squirrel cage vintage filament bulb also referred to as the ST64.

But there is good news for the user of LED bulbs too: beautiful large globe LED bulbs are available from select sources to bring back the glamour and feel of the old-style incandescent filament bulb, while offering LED, and therefore modern, technology. A great example is the G125 which can be bought from the best retailers.

These beautiful bulbs remind me of a time gone by when the incandescent filament was the only option. Today we can combine that vintage feel with a modern twist by still using it for effect – only with LED technology.
