The history of medicine in India begins with the Vedas. Ayurveda, which is still practiced in India, is an upanga (subsidiary) of the Atharvaveda. This Veda is roughly dated to the 2nd millennium BCE, but it is more likely to be earlier. Dhanvantari was believed to have received Ayurveda from the creator Brahma. Later, other rishis like Bharadvaja, Angirasa, Brihaspati and Kanva, Nagarjuna and several others contributed more knowledge. Medicine practiced in the Vedic period (up to 500 BCE) was rich in magical practices for the treatment of disease, although herbal treatment was recommended for many ailments. Conditions such as fever, consumptive (tuberculous) diarrhea and skin diseases including leprosy have been described.

He was the principal author of the Susruta Samhita, which contained discussions of general principles, anatomy, pathology, diagnosis, sensory prognosis, therapy, pharmacy and toxicology.

The Samhita consists of two parts, the first five chapters are considered to be the oldest part and the "later part" (Uttaratantra) which was added by the Buddhist monk Nagarjuna in the first century AD. Susruta is recorded to have performed many surgical procedures and all of them have been handed down to subsequent generations through his personal teachings and this Samhita. In addition, it deals with medical education, the duties of medical students and the physician's oath of care. It should be noted that this oath predates the famous Hippocratic Oath that is administered to trained physicians today. Cesarean sections were known, as was plastic surgery, and bone setting achieved a high degree of skill. Susruta classified surgical operations into eight categories: incision, excision, scarification, puncture, probing, extraction, evacuation and drainage.
