Svadharma - Discovering And Living Our Life Purpose

Course content:
The resistance and misunderstanding of dharma in contemporary society is the result of the separation of "values" and life that has been caused by the separation of church and state. This historical perspective and the connection of dharma with religion will be explored. The course will cover the Hindu worldview of Dharma drawing from selected parts of the Vedas, Upanishads, Itihaasa, Bhagavad Gita and Dharmashastra.
Samanya Dharma (universal values common to all) and Vishesha Dharma (specific duties) will be elaborated in light of the pancha-mahayajna (five sacred duties) framework. Through the wisdom of the Bhagavad Gita, the framework of karma, karma yoga and svadharma as the worship of Bhagavan is developed. The difference between a life centered on dharma and a life centered on wealth and pleasure will be explained, leading to clarity among students regarding their core values and priorities and clarity for their future lives. In the Hindu worldview, a good life is a life of svadharma.
Learning objectives of the course:
In this course students will be able to:
a) ...
... Understand and apply the framework of Samanya Dharma and Vishesha Dharma to your own lives.
b) Consider contemporary issues (eg family and marriage, war and peace, conservation and climate change, etc.) in light of dharma
c) Incorporate the Hindu worldview of dharma into their own lives and clarify their svadharma
d) Embody Dharma-based leadership for the change they wish to contribute to the world
Class structure:
Each week there will be at least 1 contact hour with a faculty instructor. The class is structured in a way that encourages discussion and debate based on self-study and reflection each week. While the content discussed in each class will be capped at 60 minutes, the discussion will be free-form and may continue for a maximum of another 30 minutes.
In keeping with the culture of the Hindu University of America, the interactive course is designed as a samvaada (meaningful dialogue) resulting in jnana and yoga, transformation paving the way for meaningful change in our communities. The meaning of the course is to live an enriched life of svadharma in all aspects, and therefore the emphasis will be on tasks that facilitate reflection and practical application. During the course, students will be required to submit two short essays. These will be based on students' self-reflection on what they have learned, adopted and applied in their lives.
