Rest Easy: 3 Types Of Dental Sedation To Consider For Your Next Appointment

Does the thought of going to the dentist’s office fill you with fear? Are you nervous about getting a crown, root canal therapy, or dental implant? You’re not alone, but getting the care you need doesn’t have to be a stressful experience. Keep reading to learn about three sedation options that can help you stay perfectly at ease throughout your time in the chair.
Nitrous Oxide
As the mildest form of sedation, nitrous oxide is gentle enough to use on children and adults alike. It is ideal for patients who experience a little bit of dental anxiety. A nasal mask releases this odorless, tasteless gas, and after inhaling for a few minutes, you feel calm, light, and warm.
Oral Conscious Sedation
If you have mild or moderate dental anxiety, your dentist may recommend oral conscious sedation, which is a prescribed pill that is taken about an hour before the appointment. By the time you arrive, the relaxing effects kick in, allowing you to have a more relaxing experience. You will be fully awake, but you may not remember details from the appointment, but keep in mind that you’ll need a designated driver ...
... to bring you and take you home afterward.
IV Sedation
IV sedation is recommended for those with moderate to severe dental anxiety and for patients undergoing long procedures. Unlike the other methods, IV sedation is given directly to the bloodstream. As a result, it takes only a few minutes to take effect. The medication does not put you to sleep, but most patients are so relaxed that they nod off during their visits. It has an amnesiac effect, meaning you will have little memory of what was going on during your visit. Similar to oral conscious sedation, you’ll need to have a ride home and someone to monitor you while the effects of IV sedation wear off.
Would you like to take advantage of one of these sedation options? Many dental practices throughout the country offer these, and one may be located near you. Be sure to talk to your dentist about your anxiety and see which sedation option is right for you!
