What is gum disease?
Gum disease – known medically as periodontal disease or periodontitis – is a common problem. It’s not only the leading cause of tooth loss in adults, but can also lead to complications with further significant health risks.

Gum disease starts with inflammation of ...
... the gums (gingivitis). This can progress to full-blown periodontal disease.

Infection can destroy bone and other tissues that anchor teeth in the jaw. Eventually, teeth can become so loose they have to be extracted.

And infection can spread from your mouth to other areas.

Gum disease complications
With gum disease, oral inflammation – resulting from the response of the immune system to infection – can travel to other parts of your body, including vital organs.
Periodontal disease has been linked with numerous medical conditions such as:

Heart disease
Diabetes
Respiratory infection
Brain disorders
Erectile dysfunction
Gum disease can also increase risk of cancer and has been associated with premature birth.

What causes gum disease?
Nearly one-third of Australian adults have moderate to severe periodontal disease, and the problem is particularly prevalent among older people.

Periodontitis is triggered by bacteria-laden plaque that builds up to form a sticky coating on teeth. Acids produced by the bacteria attack the teeth and gums and bone that supports teeth.

When the immune system reacts to this onslaught, it releases substances that inflame the gums.

Causes of gum disease include:

– Poor oral hygiene

– Poor diet

– The ageing process

– Certain medical conditions

– Genetic susceptibility

Symptoms & Treatment
Signs you may have gum disease include:

– Receding gums

– Bleeding gums

– Swollen gums

– Loose teeth

– Sensitive teeth

– Difficulty eating

– Persistent bad breath

Gum disease treatment

Early stages of gum disease are treated with antibiotics and a dental cleaning.

If the condition has become more serious, a deeper cleaning – scaling and root planing – is likely to be needed.

The most severe cases of periodontitis may require surgery and possibly bone and other tissue grafts.

If you suspect you have gum disease, contact Significant Smiles to schedule a check-up. Early diagnosis and treatment help to prevent complications and increase the likelihood of a successful outcome without invasive surgery.
