Get Introduced To Cnc Turning
In a previous article, we covered the benefits of CNC (Computer Numerical Control) for industrial operations, including how it lowers human error. Additionally, CNC milling, in which the workpiece is fixed in place while the cutting tool moves, has been covered. This article will discuss CNC turning and CNC lathe medical products, a process in which the workpiece rotates while the cutting tool stays in place.
CNC Turning Centers vs. CNC Lathes
Both CNC Turning Centers and CNC Lathe Machines are generally familiar to anybody who has spent much time in a machine shop. You've undoubtedly heard both terms used to refer to what appears to be the same industrial process carried out by comparable machinery.
Turning refers to the cutting process in general, whereas lathes were the first devices made to cut a revolving object. Before the development of CNC technology, lathe machines were recognizable and comparable. However, additional functions have been incorporated as a result of technological improvements. Therefore, there is a need to distinguish between basic machines that ...
... carry out tasks similar to those of the original lathes and advanced machines that can carry out turning cuts in additional methods.
Some businesses distinguish themselves depending on how many tool path axes the machine can handle. The four different types of CNC tool paths are 2D, 3D, 4-axis, and 5-axis. Turning centers are often 3-, 4-, or 5-axis machines, whereas lathes are primarily 2-axis devices.
Turning centers are the name given by other businesses to equipment that can carry out turning cuts in addition to milling and drilling operations. There's no need to fret whether you name a machine a turning center or CNC turning medical products or a lathe because the terms are somewhat interchangeable.
Changing the fundamentals
Although multiple shapes can be utilized as stock material with the correct adaptor, CNC turning begins with a spinning workpiece that is typically cylindrical. Until the required form is obtained, the machine rotates the workpiece while a tool engages and removes material.
The graphic above illustrates the axis convention for vertical and horizontal turning machines, which can be vertical or horizontal (6 axes shown). Since horizontal turning supports the workpiece just on one end, big and heavy designs are often machined using vertical turning. Large, heavy items vibrate due to that cantilever configuration, which degrades the quality of the machining and may harm the turning machine and tooling.
However, there are disadvantages to vertical turning, particularly when cutting concave pieces. For example, chips from the workpiece might become stuck within the machine or get caught in the spindle and lead to issues. Because horizontal machines don't have that problem, they are more prevalent and it is simpler to locate operators with the right skills thanks to their extensive use.
The turret on certain machines is positioned on an inclined plane. With this setup, formed chips are kept from building up within the turning machine during the cutting operation.
Carbide inserts are frequently used in cutting tools. Those inserts are held in tool holders, which, depending on the kind of tool, use a range of specialized holders and are affixed to the turret. Then, as part of the setup process before machining begins, tools and CNC lathe medical products are indexed.
