Events are an important part of life. We live, breathe, and adore them. However, the environmental impact of events is a major worry for our sector. ISO 20121 is an internationally recognized methodology for sustainable event management that all event professionals should use. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is a non-governmental organization with delegates from all over the world. ISO 20121 was established in 2012 as the universal standard for sustainable event management systems. ISO 20121 has been designed as the universal standard for sustainable event management systems.

ISO defines sustainability as how an organization continues to perform its activities in a commercially viable way whilst contributing towards a stronger and more just society and decreasing its impact on the environment. It is more than just being 'greener,' and incorporates larger environmental, economic, and social considerations. The core elements of sustainable events are:

• Events should have a low environmental impact in terms of energy use, greenhouse gas emissions, and waste creation.
• Events should ...
... assist the community rather than disrupt or harm anyone.
• Events should still be able to serve their primary goal and generate significant economic advantages while having a lower environmental impact.

ISO 20121 standard gives organizations a high-level overview of the issue. Even if it feels like little contribution is a speck in a vast expanse of environmental challenges, an organization can do a lot as Event Managers to make a difference. It's important to keep in mind that the ISO 20121 standard focuses on procedures that enable event professionals to continuously enhance their sustainability outcomes. It's more than simply a short checklist, which may appear cumbersome to implement, and it's not a one-person development:

• Senior management or board approval is important.
• Changes must be made to the business strategies, policies, and procedures.
• The amount of time required to analyze suppliers and identify the sources that provide eco-friendly products

The advantages of sustainable events continue to outweigh the time and financial costs. Environmental activities can ultimately result in cost savings thanks to a renewed emphasis on cutting down on waste and energy use! Not to mention the extra customers and endorsements that will probably come their way as a result of individuals recognizing the CSR efforts that the company does. Although the events industry is just beginning to dabble with full-fledged sustainability systems, the demand is increasing, and eventually, all event professionals will be expected to work with substantially reduced carbon footprints.

There are a few requirements that every organization must meet to receive ISO 20121 accreditation. In summary, according to the ISO, organizations must show that they are taking into consideration all significant financial, economic, social, and environmental issues that are pertinent to their operations and that concentrating only on environmental issues will not be adequate. So, here are some steps that help to begin the process:

• Checklist – This is a fantastic place to start when evaluating how your company is set up for sustainable event management systems.
• Briefing – A briefing presentation delivered in-person or online, designed to help you get started
• In-house Training – For a better grasp of the standard, taking an ISO 20121 auditor training course is also very important.
• Guide – provides an overview of ISO 20121 and a step-by-step road map.
• Toolkit – Sample ISO 20121 documents and templates are also an important part of the process.
• Certification – The professionals evaluate the organization and issue a certified ISO 20121 conformance certificate.
