What is a tape drive?
A tape drive is a device that stores computer data on magnetic tape, particularly for backup and archival purposes. Like an ordinary tape recorder, a tape drive records data on a loop of flexible, celluloid-like material that can be both read and erased.

Tape drives use traditional spiral scan technology, where the record and playback heads touch the tape, or linear tape technology, where the heads never touch the tape. Drives can be rewound, with the device issuing a rewind command at the end of a session, or not rewound at all.

Rewind devices are often used when a tape needs to be unmounted at the end of a session after processing large amounts of data in batches. Payroll is the classic example of this usage. There are several advantages to using tape drives, particularly for backup and archiving purposes. This includes:

Life expectancy. Tapes stored in a suitable environment can last for decades, an important factor for archiving.
