Sleep Deprivation In 40’s: Do Not Open The Doors For Chronic Illnesses

Humans must sleep for one-third of their lives in order to maintain good health, making sleep a crucial component of health. Premature mortality and illness now play a bigger part in chronic disease. Studies have increasingly focused on the role that sleep plays in these diseases. Let's explore more closely how not getting enough sleep affects these chronic illnesses.
Diabetes
The development of sleep disorders to insulin resistance and beta-cell dysfunction is mediated by a number of pathways, including fragmented sleep, sympathetic nervous system activity, and hypoxia. Increased sympathetic activity, inflammation, and obesity are all effects of fragmented sleep. The parasympathetic nervous system, which regulates sleep, lowers body temperature while reducing heart rate, blood pressure, breathing rate, gut motility, and basal metabolism. There is a bigger strain on the circulatory system, a greater basal metabolism, higher levels of stress hormones, as well as a higher likelihood of developing insulin resistance or diabetes, if the parasympathetic ...

Obesity
Epidemiological studies have also connected shorter sleep durations to growing prevalence of obesity. Laboratory investigations have shown that shorter sleep duration causes metabolic alterations linked to obesity. The CDC stated that although there is a relationship between the two across all age groups, it is particularly harmful for children and adolescents because insufficient sleep in children impairs the hypothalamus' ability to control food and energy expenditure.
Cardiovascular Diseases
According to the American Heart Association, inadequate sleep quantity and quality, along with other risk factors like high blood pressure, increased cholesterol, and atherosclerosis, are the two main causes of heart disease. Cardiovascular diseases are more prevalent when short sleep cycles are the norm. Obstructive sleep apnea and insomnia are two frequent sleeping problems that put people at higher risk of heart arrhythmias, plaque buildup, coronary artery disease, and heart failure.
Depression
Depression and sleep have a complicated relationship. While recent research has shown that depressive symptoms may lessen once sleep apnea has been successfully treated and adequate sleep has been restored, sleep disturbance has long been recognised as a significant symptom of depression. The relationship between sleep and depression shows that it's crucial to evaluate how well depressed people sleep and to keep an eye on depression symptoms in those who have sleep disorders.
The Bottom Line
Numerous pathologies have been linked to sleep deprivation or low-quality sleep. The CDC and the AHA both recommend going to bed and waking up at the same time each day if you or your family members are having trouble sleeping. Some studies have also linked sleep deprivation directly to the increasing incidences of dementia. Other suggestions include avoiding alcohol, caffeine, large meals, and noise before night; sleeping in a dark, quiet room that is set to a constant temperature; forbidding electronic devices in the bedroom; and exercising.
