Exciting new findings reveal that cannabinoids in cannabis may inhibit the spread of the virus responsible for the COVID-19 outbreak.

Oregon State University found that chemicals in hemp (Cannabis sativa) can block the COVID-19 virus from entering human cells.

The researchers discovered that two cannabinoid acids attach to the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein, preventing the virus from completing a key phase in the process by which it infects humans.

Hemp and its extracts are rich sources of these cannabinoid acids. In contrast to THC, the psychoactive component of marijuana, they are not regulated and pose little to no risk to human health.

Their studies shown that the hemp compounds were effective against both the alpha form B.1.1.7, which was initially found in the United Kingdom, and the beta variant B.1.351, which was first detected in South Africa, of SARS-CoV-2.

Multiple hemp extracts and components are added to cosmetics, body lotions, dietary supplements, and food, and the plant is used as a source of fiber, food, and animal feed.

Cannabigerolic acid (CBGA) and cannabidiolic acid (CBDA) ...
... are the two cannabis acids known to bind to the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein. In addition, COVID-19 vaccinations and antibody treatment both aim to target the spike protein with their respective drugs.

These substances have been used in people for quite some time with no reported side effects, and they can even be taken orally. They may be used both to prevent and treat SARS-CoV-2 infections.

Many people are familiar with CBD and CBG, two derivatives of the hemp plant's CBDA and CBGA. In contrast to the acids, however, these compounds are not found in hemp food.

For severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) and its variations, such as COVID-19, to be effectively treated or prevented, small-molecule therapeutic agents, such as vaccinations, are required.

These cannabinoids, whether individually or in hemp extracts, have the potential to prevent and treat infection by SARS-CoV-2 since they are orally accessible and have a long history of safe human usage.

The combination of vaccination and CBDA/CBGA treatment should provide a considerably more demanding environment for the virus, but resistant forms could still emerge in the midst of widespread use of cannabinoids.
