IVF is becoming increasingly popular among couples dealing with infertility. Although IVF may be thought out as a long-drawn-out process that may sometimes be overwhelming emotionally, it still provides hope for those who dream of experiencing parenthood but cannot conceive naturally.

IVF is essentially a medical procedure aimed at helping with fertility or preventing genetic problems and assisting in getting pregnant.

What is the meaning of IVF?

IVF Full Form in English is In Vitro Fertilization. IVF meaning in Hindi is also the same, which is इन विट्रो फर्टिलाइजेशन or more commonly known as the Test Tube baby process.

In Vitro literally means outside the body & in a test tube, culture dish, or elsewhere. Thus IVF involves retrieving the eggs from a woman’s ovary and collecting Sperm from a male, and helping them fertilize in controlled conditions in a lab. The gametes can be from the parents themselves or from donors.

Now let’s understand the process in detail.

The IVF Process

IVF technique involves a series of steps before ...
... the retrieval of the gametes and after fertilization in the lab.

Before you go about starting the IVF procedure, the doctor will have an initial consultation with you. They will determine the cause of infertility, look into the medical history, and prescribe certain blood tests and scans.

Furthermore, the doctor will counsel you regarding the process, which involves talking about the risks, along with the financial & physical aspects of the process. They will also counsel the couples about other possible options if the IVF cycle fails, as IVF does not guarantee 100% success.

After this, the following steps will be carried out:

1. Follow-up consultation to discuss the tests and scan results.

2. Semen analysis to check sperm count, morphology, and mobility.

3. Ovarian stimulation through hormonal injections to stimulate ovaries to develop multiple eggs.

4. Scans to observe the response to drugs.

5. Trigger Injection to help the eggs to mature.

6. Egg retrieval and semen sample collection.

Eggs and Sperm are placed in an incubator to fertilize. This step is what refers to In Vitro Fertilization. Embryologists will carefully monitor if the gametes have reached fertilization.

If the eggs and Sperm have successfully fertilized and developed into an embryo through the IVF technique, they need to be transferred into the uterus for implantation. This process also requires certain steps.

1. The female partner will be given medication to help prepare the lining of the uterus for implantation.

2. Three to five days after the fertilization process, the doctor will place the embryos in the uterus using a catheter. At this point, multiple embryos may be transferred to the uterus to increase the chances of implantation. This step can result in multiple babies being conceived.

3. Following this step, the waiting period begins. After about two-three weeks, the couple will be asked to perform a pregnancy test or a blood test to determine if the IVF cycle resulted in conception.

Not all IVF cycles will result in conception. Doctors, therefore, recommend that couples go through multiple IVF cycles unless a successful pregnancy is achieved. This is because multiple IVF cycles increase the chances of conceiving through the process.

Nowadays, the IVF technique has become highly advanced by incorporation of sophisticated modern tools & technologies, making it a pretty successful procedure at reasonable costs.
