In the past, the bigger aerials were necessary because the signals were not as strong as those received by antennae or aerials today. The main difference that is noted, is that the older systems used analog transmission systems, whereas current technology is geared for digital signals that ensure the better quality we are used to today.

Aerial signals, however, are not necessarily inferior - they simply receive their signal from transmission towers spaced all over the country, from where signals are sent to your aerial, and not from space such as satellite, but via a radio mast or tower. This means that aerial TV signal quality may not always be of the same high quality everywhere on earth as that from the satellite.
