How To Choose Optional Subject For Upsc

1. Interests and Educational Background of the Postgraduate Student:

Determine your interest in the subject by studying the NCERT grade level (preferably in grades 11 and 12), completing the supplementary syllabus on the subject, and your level of comfort in reading the subject.

For example:

(a) If you are in the field of commerce, find the one you have already studied in the University and choose between Commerce, Management or Public Administration as appropriate.

(b) If you have engineering background, then check the syllabus and content of electives like Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Engineering Elective - Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical etc. If you are not satisfied with the scientific topics mentioned, consult other optional items. Subjects like Geography, Psychology, Anthropology, Political Science, Sociology, Public Administration, Philosophy, etc.

3. Contribution of Electives in General Education Programme:

Find out for yourself the contribution of the elective to the general research and writing of the main examination, from the previous examinations and syllabus.

4. Completion of an elective in the most recent past (last 3 years):

A candidate's individual performance can be different from that of his competitors in many ways. But there may be electives which do not get the desired grade as compared to the effort of the candidates. Many elective subjects that go through many years of rigor in both questions and grades.

5. Time Management:

Apart from comprehension skills, the candidate has to decide how much time they can spend on the electives. Some candidates may be working during training or university studies etc. They should be able to estimate the time required for general studies as well as for their chosen elective studies.
