Chhath Puja 2022: History, Importance, Facts, and Rituals

Chhath Puja is one of the most beautiful Hindu festivals that predominantly celebrated in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal. This festival is all about worshipping God Sun and his sister Chhathi Maiya. Lasts for four days, it is celebrated in Chaitra and Kartika. Chhath Puja is celebrated after 6 days of the Diwali.

History of Chhath Puja
This festival is celebrated since Vedic times. There are different stories that are shared and narrated by people. According to some stories, Karna – son of the God Sun and Anga Desh’s king (Bhagalpur, Bihar) performed the Chhath Puja.

Another story is related to Sita Mata. It is believed that she did this puja and fasting and blessed with Lav and Kush. Besides, one story is associated with Draupadi. It is said that she did this fast and puja to eliminate hurdles and obstacles from the lives of Pandava.

Importance of Chhath Puja
On the occasion of Chhath Puja, people worship the God Sun to thank him for keeping the bountiful blessings on them. Since the Sun is known ...
... for being the primary and leading energy source, everything i.e. animals, humans, plants, etc. get energy from it. This is the festival that celebrates the power of this planet.

Interesting Facts about Chhath Puja
This festival is celebrated two times a year, first time in Chaitra and second time in Kartik (this one is the main time when it is celebrated on a larger level).

Even though both women and men used to fast on Chhath Puja, women are considered to be the main worshippers. It is said that all your wishes come true when you worship with all your heart.

Rituals of Chhath Puja
This is a 4-day festival that starts with Nahaay Khay. On the beginning, worshippers used to clean their homes, living premises, and take holy baths. Upon this, they consume satvik mean i.e. bottle guard, gram lentils, rice, etc. Before eating, they offer bhog to the deity.

Second day of Chhath Puja is known as Kharna. Worshippers do not drink even a drop of water on this day. But in the evening, they eat rasiaav – jaggery kheer with roti.

On the third day i.e. Sanjhka Aragh, people prepare bhog or Prasad (tikri, thekua, etc.) in the day time and offer the same in the evening to the God Sun as Arghya at the pond (or temporary pond) or riverbank.

The festival ends with the Bhorka Aragh on the fourth day. People worship the Sun when it rises in the morning. After this, people distribute Prasad to everyone and break their fast. This year, Chhath Puja is observed on 28th October 2022. Happy Chhath Puja to all.
