When preparing for a fire, every student should know what they need to stay safe. Here are five essential fire safety tips for American schools in Dubai:

Stay Alert

An essential element of fire safety is always being alert and aware of your surroundings. Make sure you know where all exits are, and always watch for danger. If you see or feel something strange, don’t hesitate to get away from the area as quickly as possible.

Have a Plan

When a fire starts, it can be challenging to determine what to do next. Remember to have a plan in case of emergency and stay calm during difficult situations. Take steps one at a time and follow the advice of those around you to minimize casualties and damage.

Stay Evacuated

Immediately leave the premises if there is a fire! Do not try to put out the fire yourself; instead, call the fire brigade or activate the building’s sprinkler system as instructed by emergency personnel. Remember that if you are trapped inside a burning building, don’t wait for help; use whatever means necessary to escape safely.

Practice ...
... Escape Plan

No one knows how to prepare for fire more than firefighters. They have seen it all and learned how to handle each situation best. But what about students? Therefore students must practice their escape plans regularly.

Top American schools such as North American International School (NAIS) already have an escape route, so the students know where to go if something goes wrong during a fire. Their plan also includes checking the school for smoke and heat signs every hour during regular hours and daily during fire drills.

Every school has unique procedures for responding to a fire. Still, the common practice is that students should typically evacuate the building and meet outside on an evacuation route in case of fire. Teachers should assign groups of students who head into vacated rooms and gather essential documents or materials if there is a fire. After extinguishing the fire, teachers escort students back into the building and help them retrieve their belongings.
