Applying math and science to solve problems is engineering. Engineers are the ones who translate scientific and inventive discoveries into practical applications.Engineering is a discipline that has been practised for thousands of years, but STEM education, which aims to engage students with science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, includes it as a component.The Parthenon, Stonehenge, and the Pyramids of Giza, among other places, are examples of engineering. However, modern engineers work in a variety of fields in addition to erecting structures.
Engineers work on a variety of things, such as cell membranes, building materials, prosthetics, increasing the efficiency of engines and vehicles, and creating renewable energy sources.
While the term "engineering" has roots in the 14th century, when "engine'ers" meant people who built military engines like catapults and other "siege engines," engineering has roots in the invention of the wheel (and beyond). The Corps of Royal Engineers and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are still using this military meaning today.

Civil engineering was coined to distinguish it from the original military engineering field as engineering moved beyond military applications and started to be used on non-military structures like bridges and buildings.
Why Become an Engineer?
A wide range of products, structures, and systems are designed, evaluated, developed, tested, modified, inspected, and maintained by engineers. This covers a wide range of activities, including advising on materials and procedures, supervising manufacturing and construction procedures, conducting failure analysis and investigation, offering consulting services, and instructing students and trainees in engineering.
Types
Engineering can be categorised into a wide range of different subfields, depending on where the engineer works. Engineers working in the oil and gas sector, for instance, might be referred to as petroleum engineers, while those working in agriculture-related applications might be referred to as agricultural engineers.
While traditional engineering disciplines like mechanical and civil engineering exist, other engineering fields necessitate the overlapping of various specialties. Therefore, an aerospace engineer may also need to understand certain aspects of electrical or computer engineering, and a civil engineer may also need to understand structural engineering.
Manufacturing engineering, acoustic engineering, corrosion engineering, aerospace, automotive, computer, textiles, geological, materials, and nuclear engineering are just a few of the many engineering specialties that fall under the umbrella term of "interdisciplinary engineering." These engineering specialties are all included in the 36 licenced member institutions of the UK Engineering Council's engineering branch representation.

Some of the more traditional and widespread interdisciplinary engineering fields are listed below:
1 Mechanical engineering
A wide variety of tools and devices, as well as vehicles, engines, aerospace products, weapon systems, robotics, turbines, construction and farm machinery, are all designed, manufactured, inspected, and maintained by mechanical engineers. This field of engineering is also involved in the management of instruments and control systems that monitor the functionality and status of machinery.
2 Engineering, Electrical
Engineers who specialise in electrical work create and test electrical and electronic machines, components, and systems as well as control, monitor, and inspect them. The smallest of these are microchips, while the largest are massive transmission and power generation systems. This covers a wide range of topics, such as electromagnetic devices, computer systems, telecommunications, and broadcast engineering.
3 Engineering, Civil
Roads, railways, bridges, tunnels, dams, and other major civil infrastructure projects are all designed, built, maintained, and inspected by civil engineers.
Civil engineers typically specialise in sub-disciplines like environmental engineering, structural engineering, or surveying and work on both public and private projects.
As was already mentioned, the term "civil engineering" was first used to distinguish it from "military engineering."
4. Engineering in Aerospace
Aerospace engineering, a specialised area of mechanical and electrical engineering, is concerned with the design, production, and testing of all parts and components of aircraft and spacecraft. Much of the knowledge is also applied to other vehicles, such as cars, and covers everything from vehicle aerodynamics and efficiencies to electrical control and navigation systems.
5 Nuclear Engineering
The equipment, systems, and processes for the generation and management of nuclear power are designed, created, built, operated, and tested by nuclear engineers. Nuclear engineers work on matters like monitoring and the storage of nuclear waste in order to safeguard people from potentially dangerous situations, including particle accelerators and nuclear power plant reactors.
6 Biomedical Engineering
System, tool, and device design for use in healthcare and medicine is the focus of biomedical engineers. Biomedical engineers are able to fulfil the demands of healthcare professionals by collaborating with medical specialists like doctors, therapists, and researchers.
7 Chemical Engineering
Chemical engineers refine raw materials for mixing, compounding, and processing chemicals for a variety of products using equipment, systems, and processes that are designed using physics, chemistry, biology, and engineering principles. Chemical engineers are involved in processes ranging from fermentation and the creation of biomolecules to the refining of petroleum on a large scale.
8 Computers Engineering Computer hardware, systems, networks, and software are created by computer engineers. Computer engineering combines software engineering and design with other fields like electrical engineering and computer science.
9 Industrial Engineering For manufacturing, material processing, and other industrial applications, industrial engineers design and optimise the necessary infrastructure, machinery, and systems.
10. Environmental Engineering Environmental engineers work to prevent, remove, and eliminate sources of pollution that have a negative impact on the environment. These engineers must follow government regulations when measuring pollution levels, identifying pollution sources, and cleaning up polluted areas.
11. Marine Engineering Any engineering projects on or near the oceans fall under the category of marine engineering. This covers design and development for a variety of structures, such as ships, submarines, oil rigs, on-board, harbours, and plants. Engineering disciplines like mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, civil engineering, and programming are combined in this specialised field.
