While ashes, soot, or creosote glaze from your chimney are not regularly removed from a natural gas fireplace or fireplace insert, it does require maintenance to keep it operating safely and at its best. Even if your gas fireplace is not frequently used, routine cleanings will help keep dust and debris from damaging its workings while giving you a chance to check for any damage.

After the season is over, thoroughly cleaning your natural gas fireplace will ensure that it runs properly for many years to come.

1. ASSAMBLING THE RIGHT TOOLS

As with most activities, cleaning a natural gas fireplace is easier if the right equipment is available. You will need a vacuum cleaner with a hose, a rag, an old towel or sheet, and a soft-bristle brush such as a paintbrush or hand brush (a toothbrush works best). A fire-specific alcohol-based cleaner available at your local hardware store. You can choose to wear a face mask to prevent breathing in dust and dirt.

2. TERMINATE YOUR SYSTEM IN FULL

Toggle the natural gas valve to the "off" position and press ...
... the power button. This is usually located in the fireplace insert or on the wall near the unit. The pilot makes sure the lights are completely out, then he waits 10 minutes for any gas still present to escape through the plumbing. If used recently, make sure the fireplace is completely cool before starting.

3. DESTROY THE UNIT

Remove any metal screens or drapes or fireplace glass covers, start outside and work your way inside. After this you need to take out the burner unit and the gas log. It is crucial that everything be put back together exactly as it was when it was first put together before cleaning. To make reassembling easier after cleaning, you might want to take a brief photo before you start or after each step.

4. CLEAN UP DEBRIS

Clean the inside of the fireplace by removing visible dust, bugs and cobwebs, paying particular attention to corners. To do this, use the vacuum cleaner's hose attachment. If your fireplace uses lava or glass stones, remember to clean the area around them as they tend to accumulate dust over time. If you have metal screens or mesh curtains, vacuum both sides to remove dust.

5. RECOVER ANY REMAINING DUST

Use a soft-bristle brush to dust the logs of your natural gas fireplace from top to bottom, carefully removing debris and dust from each log and decorative piece. Instead of using cleanser or water to clean these areas, simply brush or vacuum. As you clean, check each component for excessive charring, cracks, holes, or wear. As you scrub the burner unit, check the vents for debris or deposits that may block or impede gas flow. Also wipe the gas line and pilot lamp area with a dry towel.

6. DUST OFF THE GLASS COVER

Apply an alcohol-based fireplace cleaner to the glass cover and wipe with a dry cloth. Regular cleaning helps prevent permanent engraving on the glass. The burning process can cause the glass to fog up over time. While cleaning the glass, inspect the rubber gasket for signs of deterioration or cracking.

7. CLEAN THE FRAME

Clean the external frame and mantle of your gas fireplace with a moist rag.

8. REASSEMBLY

Make sure all components are completely dry before beginning the reassembly process. Wet areas can impede the unit's ability to function properly and safely. Before putting the gas fireplace back in, check out the previous photo. Make sure the logs are laid exactly as they were before cleaning to reduce the chance of carbon monoxide leaks. Replace or close the glass cover and then return the natural gas line to the "on" position.

9. VERIFY YOUR VENTS

If your natural gas fireplace vent is outside, you should check this once a month to make sure leaves and nests aren't blocking it.
