Compressed gases are, by their nature, dangerous. They are all accomplished of creating environments that are also flammable, oxygen enriched, or oxygen deficient. Consider a gas as mutual as nitrogen, which contains almost 80% of the earth's atmosphere. Even it can move breathable oxygen in an enclosed space and cause asphyxiation. There are over 200 different gaseous and associated types of materials dispersed in gas cylinders. Compressed gases are present nearly everywhere, from health care centers where they supply critical oxygen to patients for breathing, to manufacturing environments where gases are used in welding, chemical, or to fuel powered industrial vehicles. Because gas containers are mutual in everyday activities, many times the risks of these cylinders are ignored and not given proper safety considerations. Something as simple as an unexpected release of gas from a cylinder can reason it to become a powerful missile-like projectile.
Compressed gas hazards are diverse, from the physical assets of the gases themselves, to the potential hazards associated with handling cylinders, to the special precautions ...
... essential to safely move or store gas cylinders. Unsafe use, transport and storage of compressed gas cylinder can also reason accidents of fire and explosion leading to widespread damage to lives and properties. Compressed Gas Cylinder Safety training chiefly covers the features of safe use, handling, transportation, storage, and disposal of gas cylinders. Knowing the dangers associated with the gases employees handle and the essential precautions is imperative to maintain a safe working environment. The preferred method of transporting gas cylinders is to let a professional gas transport organization handle it, but there might be times when that is not an option. In those cases, need to know how to do it yourself appropriately.
Guidelines:
• Try to limit the number of cylinders that are transporting.
• Confirm the cylinder contents are visibly labeled.
• Confirm the cylinder valve is in the completely closed position.
• Use valve protection caps before moving.
• A pressure release device must be in communication with the vapor space of the cylinder.
• Use cylinder models or other mechanical lifting devices to move the cylinders to the vehicle.
• Never drop the cylinders or let things to bang into them.
• An open vehicle or trailer is chosen.
• Transporting the cylinders in a standing position is always preferred.
• Cylinders should be placed only on flat platforms.
• If the cylinders are protected to a pallet, the pallet must be able to transport 3500 lbs per pallet, and the cylinders must be protected by a web strap rated at 10,000 lbs.
• Protected the cylinders in the vehicle or trailer to stop movement during transit. Cylinders should not be permitted to shift relative to each other.
• When transporting hydrogen or cryogenic liquid cylinders, the vehicle must have an open body with a support capable of holding the cylinder standing when subjected to 2g of acceleration, and the vehicle may not enter a tunnel.
Transportation of Compressed gas Cylinders:
• Only personnel of appropriate physical stature and strength are physically to move gas cylinders so as to minimize any potential risk resulting from the size and weight of the cylinders.
• When cylinders are moved, they will be disconnected from any regulators or manifolds, and were negotiated to accept protective valve caps, the valve caps shall be protected in place before the cylinders are released from their securing device.
• Cylinders shall be transported only on a hand truck or other cart designed for handling gas cylinders.
• Not more than one cylinder shall be handled at a time except on carts considered to transport more than one cylinder.
