Keyword placement in search engines is a big game. You must have relevant keyword positioning on page, and have correct usage of meta description and title. These are key on-page factors.

Off-page is a highly difficult game of many many hours of hard work to achieve keyword postioing on search results.

You need inbound links from relevant quality sites, PR value does play a part but not as much as people go mad about. Just make sure the site is indexed and your link in will be seen.

Links from DMOZ and other high PR directories certainly DO help, your site will be seen by google and there helped.

Niche links from authority sites need to be plentiful and natural links found by other users across the net on forums, bookmark sites, blogs etc will get your site up on the keyword chain.

Anchor text is very important and powerful and link position on page, ie footer or header or "in content". In content is what its all about, in the middle of a big text break.

Your internal link structure should be sound with links back to the homepage from each sub category and links to powerful pages ...
... from the homepage directly.

The higher up your page is in the structure of your site the more prominence it has when google indexes your site.

Dont link out from your homepage too much, leaking PR in this way will not help your site.

Submitting to thousands of directories is likely to help a little but dont over do it, google may be an enourmous rise in links too quickly as unnatural. Whether you get penalised or not is something that no one can be 100% sure, as it this was the case anyone could penalise a compoetitor site.

Lastly look at your competitor wbsites and their intrnal link structure, links in, keyword placement, h1 and h2 tags,and article submissions.

Keep your seo white hat and above the line, black hat technique are going to land you in trouble.
