Aluminum Chlorohydrate can be produced commercially by reacting Aluminium with hydrochloric acid. Aluminum-containing raw materials such as Aluminium metal, alumina trihydrate, Aluminium chloride, Aluminium sulphate, and combinations of these can be used. By-product salts such as sodium/calcium/magnesium chloride or sulphate may be present in the products. Due to the explosion risk associated with hydrogen produced by the reaction of Aluminium metal with hydrochloric acid, the most common industrial practise is to prepare an Aluminium Chlorohydrate (ACH) solution by reacting Aluminium hydroxide with hydrochloric acid. In an open mixing tank, the ACH product is reacted with Aluminium ingots at 100 °C using steam. The polymer form of the PAC n to m ratio is determined by the Al to ACH ratio and the reaction time allowed.
