Long-term Solution For The Treatment Of Dry Eyes By Eye Specialists In The Uk

It is not uncommon for people to experience dry eyes and require treatment. Dry eyes leave a patient feeling uncomfortable, resulting in sore and itchy eyes. Efficient treatment of dry eyes in the UK will ensure a stress-free treatment solution providing exceptional results and improving quality of life.
1. Diagnosis Of Dry Eyes
An ophthalmologist will examine the eyes and conduct tests and procedures to diagnose and determine the condition of the eyes and the cause. They will conduct a full comprehensive eye exam including a detailed history of the patient’s health and eye health.
They will test the volume of tears using a system called the Schirmer test, which measures tear production. Strips of paper are placed under the eyelids and after five minutes the ophthalmologist will measure the moisture soaked on the strip by the tears. A similar test can be done by using phenol red thread where the thread has pH-sensitive dye and is placed over the lower eyelid to check the thread that will change colour depending on the tear volume.
2. The Cause Of Dry ...
... Eyes
Poor eye hygiene is usually the cause of blocked tear glands and results in a condition known as Blepharitis. The tear film consists of three layers: the mucus, aqueous, and lipid layers. The lipid layer is made from meibomian glands that are found in the lid margin that often become blocked. This results in the reduction of the lipid layer and does not prevent the aqueous layer from evaporating, which causes the dyes to become dry, itchy, and sore.
The cause of film dysfunction or dry eyes may include hormone changes, autoimmune diseases, inflamed eyelids or glands, or eye disease. Most people experience dry eyes because of decreased tear production or an increase in tear evaporation.
3. Result Of Dry Eyes
If the condition is left without treatment symptoms of Blepharitis can start as a result of a worsening condition. Certain behaviour and lifestyle habits can play a role in the development of Blepharitis. If this problem occurs it is advisable to delay the use of contact lenses, reduce screen time such as TV or gaming, stay away from low-humidity areas and follow a diet that is rich in omega-3 and vitamin D.
4. Symptoms Of Dry Eyes
As a result of lack of treatment for dry eyes, there may be symptoms indicating the condition Blepharitis like watery, crusty eyes, dandruff around the eyelashes, sensitivity to light, blurry vision, inflammation, discomfort when using contact lenses, and difficulty opening the eyes when waking up in the morning. Tired eyes, headaches, and double vision are also symptoms of strained eyes.
5. Treatment For Dry Eyes
It is important to clean the eyelids daily, take regular breaks to rest the eyes when working at a computer, and ensure the screen is below eye level. A humidifier can assist by preventing the air from becoming dry and rather leave contact lenses and using glasses to rest the eyes.
A mild type of eye drops called artificial tears can help soothe the eyes and is available over-the-counter without a prescription. Other moisturising gels and ointments can help treat the eyes and minimize discomfort. Eye drops can reduce the symptoms by lubricating the eyes and washing away any grit or foreign materials present in the eye.
Drinking a lot of water and keeping the body well hydrated will help in the treatment of dry eyes. To help inflammation that results from the lack of flow of oil to the eyes, a warm washcloth can be applied to the eyes, and a mild soap or baby shampoo can be used on the eyelids.
To help relieve the symptoms, eye drops can reduce redness, tear evaporation, reduce eye irritation and inflammation. Some have tried acupuncture therapy to help with the symptoms.
